Orphaned By Landslide Last Year, This Kerala Teen Has Now Aced Plus Two Exams
The meritorious girl lost them last year to a tragic landslide that hit layams (line houses) of plantation workers in Pettimudi in Kerala’s Idukki district.
Kerala orphan aces plus two exams: It is a big day for Gopika G today as she has passed the Higher Secondary examination with flying colours. However, she is not happy. Reason? Her parents are not there to celebrate with her. She lost them last year to a tragic landslide that hit layams (line houses) of plantation workers in Pettimudi in Kerala’s Idukki district.

"It was my parents’ dream to see me pass Plus Two with good marks. But they are not here to see this…", she said speaking to TNM.
Besides her parents, she also lost 22 other family members including her grandparents, uncles, aunts and cousins. She was saved as she was at her relatives' house in Thiruvananthapuram district. She was attending her Plus One classes at the Government Model Girls Higher Secondary School. Her sister was also there with her. Though she couldn't excel in her Plus One examination held last year, she has aced all her exams this year by securing A+ in all subjects. She credits the support of friends and other known ones who helped her cope with the trauma.
The meritorious girl aspires to be a doctor. To fulfill her dream, she is preparing for NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test).
Last year, M Krishnaveni became the first person in her village in Irulapatti to pass Class 12 board exams. She belongs to a tribal community in Tamil Nadu. She secured 295 marks out of 600. She also became the the first person from her village to pursue higher studies. She wanted to crack civil service examination. Read more such stories.
