A woman was allegedly ''dress-coded'' for wearing shorts to a job interview, who later made a TikTok video explaining the incident. The woman, Tyreshia, defended her outfit decision and condemned the recruiter. However, her followers on TikTok and social media users had mixed opinions about the incident, some defending her and others criticising her decision to dress 'unprofessionally' for the interview in the first place.

What happened?

The video, which has received more than 34 million views and 26 thousand likes on X since it was posted last week, was captioned, ''I cannot believe the recruiter asked me to change my interview clothes then come back. I look very neat and professional, so no!''

Tyreshia then went on to show her entire outfit, with text that said, "The recruiter rejected me because of this!" She showed herself wearing black shorts and a white top.

She explained how the recruiters gave her the option to go home, change, and then come back for the interview. However, she refused to give the interview out of principle even when they offered to reschedule for the next day.Ā

Reactions to the video

X users had varied reactions to the video.Ā  A user, supporting Tyreshisa, commented, ''performative professionalism is an archaic concept that only exists to make power hungry recruiters feel something in their hollow existences. Unless the outfit is actively offensive or sexualised, the only time dress should be a factor is if it's a front-facing job.''

Another user commented, ''Let's deconstruct and reconstruct the standard for what's professionally acceptable. Nothing was wrong with what she had on. The same way we were able to change the stigma behind black women and hair as it relates to professionalism, let's do that for some articles of clothing as well.''

However, most comments disagreed with the video, maintaining that the outfit was not professional enough for a job interview.Ā  An X user reposted the video, saying, ''Wearing shorts to an interview is absolutely insane. I'm honestly surprised they offered to reschedule.''

Another said, ''I'm more concerned about why she thinks this is ok, to the extent of making a video about it,'' and, ''It's a blessing that they would allow her to come back. Sounds like the person was trying to help not hurt. The shorts are fine sis just inappropriate for the occasion.''
