The Wimbledon craze in India just grew multifold as the tournament's official Instagram page endorsed a handloom saree embroidered and painted with names of popular athletes and tennis-themed motifs. The beautiful fusion of tradition and sport has struck a chord with many, symbolising the growing appreciation of South Asian culture on the global stage. The saree was draped by Vadodara-native content creator Ritvi Shah, whose elegant styling further elevated the vibrance of the ensemble.

Wimbledon-Themed Saree

The Wimbledon-themed saree paid an ode to the tennis champions who have made an indelible impact on the sports landscape worldwide. The white handloom six-yard fabric came with a green border embroidered with the names of the nation's beloved tennis players-- from Sania Mirza to Novak Djokovic-- painted in gold.

On the pallu of the saree was a large logo of Wimbledon. Across the length of the saree were motifs of zardozi-embroidered trophies and miniature tennis rackets along with handpainted strawberries, which, accompanied with whipped cream, have been the top choice for snacks at the tournament for centuries.

Wimbledon's Instagram page gave a glimpse into how the tennis-themed saree came to life. The video captioned 'Grace meets tradition' showed a team of artisans interlacing lengths of threads to traditionally weave the saree. Then, another artist is seen hand-painting strawberries before the embroidery experts take over.

The artisans then deftly embroider intricate shimmering beads to decorate the saree with Wimbledon-esque designs. The saree is a masterpiece reflecting the dedication, skill, and artistry of the craftsmen involved. This collaboration highlighted the intersection of traditional Indian craftsmanship and the prestigious world of Wimbledon.

Not only does the saree resonate with tennis fans and the Indian audience but it also paints a larger image of the force of collaborations among small-scale artists and global institutions.
