A Unique Culinary Art Form

Spending an impressive 120 hours on this project, Wibowo has created a series of portraits of well-known British personalities using authentic Japanese sushi ingredients such as sushi rice, smoked salmon, and pickled ginger. These intricate and playful creations demonstrate Wibowo's exceptional talent and creative vision.

Real Or Cake? Except, Its Sushi

Wibowo's work features celebrities including England footballers Harry Kane and Bukayo Saka, singers Elton John and Ed Sheeran, and actor Benedict Cumberbatch. Each portrait measures 18cm tall and 10cm wide, roughly the size of a grapefruit, showcasing the artist's meticulous attention to detail and skill in manipulating unconventional materials to create recognisable likenesses.

The inspiration behind Wibowo's sushi heads is rooted in her love for laughter and amusement. She expressed her hope that viewers would find the portraits as hilarious as she does. "I’m used to creating sculptures from unconventional materials, but working with sushi ingredients was a whole other kettle of fish," Wibowo remarked. The artist found it fascinating to explore the variety of sushi ingredients and their potential for creating intricate facial features and hair details.

A History of Innovative Art

This is not the first time Michelle Wibowo has garnered attention for her innovative art. She previously made headlines with her sugar models of Queen Elizabeth II, Prince William, and Hogwarts Castle from the Harry Potter stories. Her ability to transform everyday materials into extraordinary art pieces has consistently captivated audiences and critics alike.

A Celebration of International Sushi Day

Wibowo's one-day exhibition took place at CasildART Gallery in London, marking International Sushi Day. The event was made possible with the support of Yutaka, a Japanese food brand that provided the essential sushi ingredients for her creations. This collaboration highlights the fusion of culinary artistry and cultural celebration, bringing together the worlds of food and visual art in a delightful and humorous display.

Michelle Wibowo's work not only entertains but also inspires viewers to appreciate the artistry in everyday objects and ingredients. By combining humor, culture, and meticulous craftsmanship, Wibowo has created a memorable and unique exhibition.
