Inadequate Sex Ed Highly Impacts Women's Safety - Simran Balar Jain Tells Us Why

In conversation with SheThePeople, Simran Balar Jain explained how her work extends beyond social media virality to empower women with innovative products and promote open conversations about menstrual hygiene and sexual wellness.

Her inspiration to delve into sexual education content originated from a personal frustration with the inadequate information available to herself and her peers. Recognising that many others faced similar challenges, she decided to bridge this gap. Starting with foundational posts that debunked myths and provided essential facts, her journey quickly evolved. She adopted a comprehensive approach, incorporating in-depth series, interactive Q&A sessions, and collaborations with experts to ensure the accuracy of her information.

She added, "Authenticity is crucial; my followers trust me because I share from a place of genuine care and experience. Staying true to my mission allows me to build a community of engaged individuals ready to challenge the status quo. By balancing informative content with relatable personal stories, I create a connection that encourages open dialogue and fosters a supportive environment."

Addressing Misconceptions and Stigmas

Jain has highlighted several misconceptions and stigmas about women and sex that she addressed through her content. First, she emphasised that a harmful misconception is the belief that women should be passive during sexual experiences, seen only as objects of desire rather than active participants with their own desires.

Additionally, she pointed out another stigma: the idea that it's inappropriate for women to talk openly about sex. This silence around the topic perpetuates feelings of shame and a lack of understanding. Jain also addressed misconceptions related to menstruation, contraception, and sexual orientation, aiming to dispel harmful stereotypes and provide accurate information through her education efforts.

She noted, "Educating women about their bodies and rights helps them make informed decisions, leading to better health outcomes, increased self-esteem, and a stronger sense of agency. Ultimately, comprehensive sex education promotes overall well-being and equality by empowering women with the knowledge they need to navigate their sexual lives confidently."

Drawing from her personal experience, Jain highlighted the profound impact of inadequate sex education on women's health and well-being. She emphasised that the absence of comprehensive information significantly increases the risks of unintended pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among women. "This lack of knowledge leaves them ill-equipped to make informed decisions about contraception and safe sex practices, leading to physical, emotional, and financial challenges."

Moreover, Jain underscored the detrimental effects on mental health caused by insufficient sexual education. She said, "Women without proper sexual education often experience shame, guilt, and confusion about their bodies and sexual experiences. This can lead to anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem. Additionally, harmful gender norms and stereotypes perpetuate unrealistic expectations, further damaging women’s mental health."

Importantly, Jain also stressed the critical need for understanding consent and healthy relationship dynamics. When women lack this knowledge, their ability to navigate safe and consensual sexual experiences is undermined, placing their autonomy and safety at risk and resulting in negative physical and emotional outcomes. Thus, Jain's advocacy aims to bridge these gaps through comprehensive sex education, empowering women with essential information for their health and overall well-being.

When asked for advice by young women who might feel hesitant or embarrassed about seeking health information, Jain emphasised the importance of prioritising their well-being. She encouraged them, saying, "Your health is paramount. Seeking knowledge is a courageous step towards taking control of your life." Jain reassured them that having questions and seeking answers shows strength, adding, "Know that you are not alone. Many share the same questions, and there are numerous resources and communities to support you."

She continued, advising, "Don't hesitate to ask questions. Consulting healthcare professionals, reaching out to mentors, or joining online forums are crucial steps." Jain emphasised that no health-related question is trivial, stressing, "Being proactive is empowering and necessary." She suggested finding supportive environments where discussing concerns feels comfortable, whether in local groups, online communities, or among understanding friends.

Acknowledging that feeling embarrassed is natural, Jain urged not letting those feelings hinder proactive health care. "Celebrate your curiosity and willingness to learn," she encouraged. "Every step towards understanding your body and health is empowering."

Concluding with a strong message, Jain affirmed, "Your health is your own. You have the right to seek information and make decisions that are best for you." She urged not allowing societal norms or stigma to hold young women back, saying, "You deserve the knowledge and resources to care for your body and well-being." Jain advised staying curious, informed, and remembering that each person is their own best advocate.

She recalled, "One memorable story is from a young woman who watched my video about consent. This newfound knowledge gave her the courage to speak up and seek support, which made me so happy."
