In an interview with SheThePeople, Khanna spoke about her upcoming collection, To Dye For, which she identifies as an "ode to Indian summer and all the beauty it brings with it." Steering away from grand gestures and exotic locations, the collection draws inspiration from the everyday elegance we encounter around us.

Anushka Khanna's Design Vision

Growing up in a family involved in garment export, Anushka Khanna's journey in fashion started at a young age. While she initially intended to pursue art, she eventually found her calling in design and earned a degree from the London School of Fashion. After completing a few internships, she founded her eponymous label.

"I felt there was space in the market for young, contemporary wear that was affordable but also showcased a new twist on Indian traditions," the sought-after designer told SheThePeople. Her designs epitomise the charm of Indian traditional craftsmanship with her creativity shining through in each eye-catching print and vivid hue.

Khanna described why her designs prioritise comfort and utility above all. "I've always kept my customer front of mind. And the women around me all want clothes that are easy, timeless and do double duty. We don't want pieces that cut into us, that weigh on us or lie in our closet for years. The biggest compliment for me is when people tell me how often they have worn my outfits."

However, that does not mean her work is devoid of some sparkle. For her latest collection To Dye For, Khanna has incorporated resplendent mirror work, embroidery, and sequins on lightweight, colourful tie-dyed fabric. This blend of shimmer and ease is what makes Khanna’s designs so appealing to modern fashion enthusiasts.

"We are lucky to have such amazing traditions and techniques - but what people seem to forget these days is that those techniques are meant to be intricate and beautifully done," Khanna shared. "We believe in delicacy, not ostentation. You don't literally have to wear your weight in gold. For me, nothing beats elegance."

Where Does Anushka Khanna Find Inspiration?

The best part about Khanna's designs is that there is no limit to creativity. Her philosophy for finding inspiration transcends the maximalist definitions of beauty, embracing the 'mundanity' and subtlety found in everyday moments-- be it the cerulean summer skies, the zesty orange of turmeric, or the warm hues of wet mud.

"I look for inspiration everywhere-- art, the colour of my son's toys, home design, travel; but most of all, I look for it in the women I interact with. What is missing in their wardrobes? What will make their lives easier sartorially? What will make them look and feel good? In every collection, we pinpoint a certain Indian tradition or technique and then build on that with colour and texture," described Khanna.

In a profession that constantly demands innovation and originality, Khanna shared how she deals with mental exhaustion or creative blocks. "Travel. Digital detox. Time at home playing with my son, we love to colour and do projects. I try to enjoy the smaller moments, my afternoon cup of tea on the balcony, a fun lunch with friends or family, and a good walk helps me get my juices flowing," she said.

Khanna’s approach to finding inspiration is as dynamic as her designs. Her work is deeply intertwined with her everyday personal experiences, allowing her to continuously explore new ideas and perspectives. By focusing on what truly resonates with her consumers, she ensures that her collections remain relevant and connected to the lives of modern women.
