Devkanya Pandey's Journey

Devkanya Pandey from Madhya Pradesh lost her father at a young age and took on the responsibility of supporting her mother, two sisters, and brother. However, the journey to financial independence was not easy, as she is a person with a disability. At the age of five, Pandey lost her legs due to medical negligence.

After losing her father, she strived to be independent and began selling snacks on a handcycle. Despite being unable to continue her education beyond Class 8, she continued to remain motivated and work for herself and her family. Then, in 2018, she started driving and obtained her e-rickshaw licence on her first attempt.

She told the Times of India in an interview, "I knew I wouldn't get a job so I started driving an e-rickshaw. I started working because I like the hustle. There are people like other auto-rickshaw drivers who pass comments but I make a point to not be bothered by them. My work helps me run the finances of my family."

Pandey told Free Press Journal that she makes a monthly profit of around Rs 5,000 to 6,000. Despite the financial struggles with expenses and inflation, Pandey strives to provide a better future for her children. While some customers doubt her abilities as a female in a male-dominated field, she emphasises that women can achieve anything.

Pandey's husband is also an e-rickshaw driver with a disability. While seeking a loan for another e-rickshaw, her grit also inspired the bank employees. "The employees were impressed with my work and offered the loan easily," she told TOI. Her efforts were even recognised by former MP Chief Minister M Kamal Nath.
