Uma Satya Gadde, an Indian student pursuing his education in Cleveland, Ohio, tragically passed away on Friday, marking the 10th such death of an Indian-origin student in the United States since the beginning of 2024.

The news, confirmed by the Indian Consulate in New York, has cast a shadow over the Indian student community in the US. While the cause of Gadde's death remains unknown, local police in Cleveland have opened an investigation.

The Consulate expressed its deepest condolences to Gadde's family in India and assured them of all possible assistance, including facilitating the return of his mortal remains. This incident adds to the growing concern about the safety of Indian students abroad.

The lack of details surrounding Gadde's death makes it difficult to understand the situation fully. Whether it was an accident, foul play, or a medical emergency remains unclear.

A String of Unfortunate Events

Gadde's death is the latest in a disturbing trend of Indian students losing their lives in the US under mysterious circumstances. Last month, another Indian student Mohammed Abdul Arafat mysteriously went missing from Cleveland, Ohio while his family received ransom demands for his safe return.

Earlier this year, a 34-year classical dancer from Kolkata, Amarnath Ghosh was shot dead in St. Louis, Missouri. Another 20-year-old student from Gantur, Paruchuri Abhijit studying at Boston University, was found murdered and dumped in a nearby forest. It is to be noted that all these cases are just around March and there are already 10 such cases of heinous crimes against Indian students in the US already when we have just completed the first quarter of the year.

Indian Community Abroad

The news of Gadde's passing has undoubtedly sent shockwaves through the Indian community in Cleveland and across the US. Social media is likely filled with tributes and messages of condolence for the young man.

Following these concerning trends, the Indian Embassy in Washington and Indian consulates across the state held a virtual interaction with Indian students across the universities in the US with approximately 150 Indian students association office bearers participating along with various Indian students from more than 90 universities across the US.
