Nithu Vaanjaksshi, a transgender woman based in Bangalore, embodies resilience, talent, and the courage to be true to herself despite societal pressures. Her journey from struggling with her identity to becoming a celebrated figure in the LGBTQIA+ community is both inspiring and empowering.

“Even though I was born as a male, I liked putting on my sister’s makeup and clothes.”

Growing up, Nithu felt different from other boys. She found comfort in expressing herself through art. Sketching and drawing became a medium for her to convey her thoughts that she couldn't vocalise. However, the fear of judgement and rejection led her to hide her true identity, causing immense emotional pain.

“Being a tattoo artist meant being known for your talent and not your gender”

With the encouragement of a supportive teacher, she honed her skills and gained recognition, winning numerous awards for her talent. Despite facing societal scrutiny for her mannerisms and appearance, Nithu discovered her passion for art and tattooing. She then pursued a career as a tattoo artist, finding fulfilment in her craft and the connections she forged with her clients.

“Everything was good until Mom started looking for a girl for me to get married”

As Nithu approached marriageable age, the pressure to conform to societal norms intensified. However, she knew it was time to confront her truth. With trepidation, she confided in her sister, hoping for understanding and acceptance. Sadly, her sister's initial reaction was one of disbelief and discomfort. However, her mother's love and acceptance validated Nithu's journey towards self-acceptance. She underwent gender-affirming surgery.

“I was crowned as Miss Transqueen 2019”

Through her triumphs and challenges, Nithu Vaanjaksshi emerges as a hope for individuals who are going through similar struggles. With her belief that authenticity is our greatest asset, Nithu not only won the Miss Transqueen 2019 but was able to represent the country in Bangkok for the Tiffany Show with her hard work and dedication.  Later, she also participated in reality shows like Bigg Boss Karnataka.

“People will judge you for one thing or the other but how you respond to it changes the narrative”

In sharing her story, Nithu Vaanjaksshi encourages others to embrace their individuality and defy societal expectations. She reminds us that while the world may be cruel, our response to the judgments defines our narrative. Nithu's journey is a testament to the power of resilience, self-love, and the transformative impact of living authentically.
