Saru, a homemaker, mother, and content creator, exemplifies the challenges faced by women in similar roles. Her story reflects the often underestimated role of homemakers, as she navigates a journey marked by a challenging pregnancy and the unspoken struggles of postpartum life. This article aims to shed light on these challenges and offers a glimpse into the unrecognised and undervalued labour of homemakers and the value they bring to our communities.

“The pregnancy was complicated, which is why I decided to quit my job to make sure my child was healthy and looked after.”

Facing a two-year challenge in conceiving, Saru confronted a demanding pregnancy, leading her to opt for an early maternity leave. She was questioned and called out for making this decision. “What about your own aspirations and goals? Are you just giving them up?” they asked. But, in order to prioritise her baby’s health and well-being, she made the courageous decision to focus entirely on her child's upbringing, choosing not to return to her corporate life.

“I became highly self-critical and the fact that I was financially dependent would make me feel even worse about myself.”

Despite having a supportive family, Saru experienced postpartum depression and a diminishing sense of self and purpose. She said she was supposed to be grateful for my family, but all she felt was a deep sense of loss, she didn't even recognize her own self. She even mentioned how societal conditioning often dismissed the significance of homemaking and that contributed to her emotional distress and took a toll on her mental well-being.

“Starting my own blog and creating content for my Instagram page was what gave me the actual sense of identity I was looking for.”

However, Saru found solace and a renewed sense of identity through journaling, blogging, and creating content for her Instagram page.

This not only allowed her to express herself, and regain her confidence but also helped her demonstrate her talents and capabilities beyond the traditional homemaker role. Sharing her experiences allowed her to support and inspire others who might be facing similar challenges. It reminded her that she could connect with others and make a meaningful impact. Her journey reflects the importance of self-care, pursuing one's passions, and not allowing societal expectations to dictate one's worth.

This is a reminder to all homemakers that your choices, whether centred around your family or a career, hold equal significance and value. Embrace your choices! Saru's experience highlights the importance of acknowledging the legitimacy and worth of homemaking as a vital contribution to society. Always prioritise your well-being and engage in activities that bring you joy and fulfilment, recognizing that your dedication shapes the foundation of countless lives and communities, making your role indispensable and deserving of recognition.
