Films like Mission Mangal, Saand Ki Aankh, Manikarnika and Ek Ladki ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga brought us fresh and pathbreaking stories of empowerment in the previous year. A yet something seemed to be missing from the narrative, leaving us longing for women-centric stories that were both inspiring and well-crafted. This year though looks promising, with two major women-led films (made by women directors) coming up in the first month itself. Here is a list of women-centric Hindi movies we all are looking forward to in 2020:

Chhapaak

Directed by Meghna Gulzar, Chhapaak is all set to hit the theatres on January 10. This film is based on the life and triumph of acid attack survivor Laxmi Agarwal. It narrates how she faces society after her ordeal and ultimately accepts life and herself, fighting for the ban on the sale of acid. Deepika Padukone will play the role of Malti, the protagonist.

Shakuntala Devi

The biopic on Shakuntala Devi, the Human-Computer, with Vidya Balan in the leading role, will come out in May 2020. Directed by Anu Menon, the film also stars Sanya Malhotra in a key role. The first look revealed Balan sporting a short bob, calculating sums on her fingertips. This movie aims to celebrate the woman who made math fun. Vidya, with her remarkable acting skills, has always managed to move the audiences, and we expect the same from this biographical account.

Yet another biographical drama, directed by the newcomer Sharan Sharma, the film stars Janhvi Kapoor in the lead role. Based on the inspiring story of Gunjan Saxena, the first Indian Air Force pilot in combat along with Sridivya Rajan, the film will theatrically release on 13 March 2020. The film will also see actor Pankaj Tripathi essay the role of Saxena's father.

Thalaivi

The biographical movie based on life of actor Jayalalithaa who served as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu for over fourteen years stars Kangana Ranaut in the lead role. The film is scheduled to release in three languages, Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi in June 2020. Ranaut, owing to the exemplary makeup, looks unrecognizable in the first teaser that was released recently.

Thappad

Taapsee Pannu, known for realistic portrayal of everyday bold women on-screen will be seen next in a film directed and produced by Anubhav Sinha, that will hit the theatres on Women's Day this year. "The film explores the basis of a man-woman relationship and gender equality through an engaging story of a husband and wife," reports Times of India. Taapsee, with her exemplary prowess, has set the bar really high.

Gangubai Kathiawadi

Based on Hussain Zaidi's novel Mafia Queens of Mumbai, this Alia Bhatt starrer is directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Gangubai Kothewali, known as the 'Madam of Kamathipura', was a matriarch brothel owner in the 60s. She was concerned about the life of sex workers and was one of the most influential pimps of Mumbai due to the underworld connections she had. The film forays into a bold issue that is hardly paid heed to. Bhatt is famed for her remarkable acting and we hope she owns this character as well.

Saina

Saina is a biographical sports film directed by Amole Gupte based on the life of ace badminton player, Saina Nehwal. It stars Parineeti Chopra in the titular role and will release early this year. Manav Kaul will play the character of Pullela Gopichand, her coach. The actress is neck-deep in preparation for the role and is leaving no stones unturned to do justice to the project that was initially to be done by after Shraddha Kapoor.

Panga

The sports drama film directed by Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari stars Kangana Ranaut in the lead role. It is the story of a  former Kabaddi player who struggles to make a come back to the sport she loves while managing her middle-class family. This is pretty much the story of most sportswomen trying to balance their personal lives and sports career. The emotional roller-coaster tale will release on 24 January 2020.

Malala used to blog against the Taliban oppression under the pseudonym Gul Makai, hence the name. The film releases on 31 January 2020.

Dhaakad

Directed by Razneesh Ghai, the film stars Kangana Ranaut in a feisty character, breaking the stereotype of men taking up ferocious roles in action films. The makers are making all efforts to train Kangana in martial arts and handling guns apart from grooming her well in the art of  Gun Fu. Ranaut, over the last decade, has explored varied genres and is widely praised for her notable roles. The film will release on Diwali this year.
