The trailer for Netflix's new series Fabulous Lives Of Bollywood Wives came out today. Starring Maheep Kapoor, Bhavana Pandey, Neelam Kothari Soni, and Seema Khan, the show shall reveal the “reality” behind the “fabulous lives” of these four women, come November 27.
Unravelling The Fabulous Lives Of Bollywood Wives
The trailer shows Kapoor, Pandey, Soni, and Khan living life, queen-size. The quartet travel in luxury cars, shop at high-end stores and attend oh-so-glamourous events like the Le Ball Paris. The trailer also shows the four wives, who have been friends for “25 odd years”, taking jibes at each other, having disagreements, and setting the stage for potential catfights.
Perhaps one of the most notable parts of the trailer is the one which shows the group taking a vacation to an exotic overseas location. The part shows the quartet having the time of their lives as they flirt with a hotel employee. There is also a ‘stalker’ thrown in for good measure during one of their girls’ night outs. Overall, the trailer promises a series that will give us a glimpse into the ‘fabulous lives’ of Bollywood wives even as they deal with things that might hit close to home for a lot of laywomen – “work, kids, husbands.”

How Fabulous Is Too Fabulous?
Right off the bat, the trailer reminded me of umpteen international shows based on the same concept – The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, The Hills, and, due to a very obvious reference, Keeping Up With The Kardashians. As the four leading ladies are connected to Bollywood, one of the most ostentatious and glittery industries, in one way or another, luxury and gossip are to be expected from the show, thus that aspect of the trailer didn't surprise me. However, what did shock me was the in-your-face celebration of the same. Rich housewives are notorious beings in cultural representations, courtesy their alleged tendencies to spend money mindlessly and gossip maliciously. Going by trailer, this new Netflix original might just reaffirm the same stereotypical image.

Even so, the camaraderie between the four women seems to be organic. Additionally, all the luxury is peppered with subtle self-deprecatory humour that can be appreciated for its self-awareness and humour. Replete with fiery “potshots”, high-end couture, first-hand tales of the sisterhood of the rich, and a cameo by Gauri Khan and Shah Rukh Khan, the show seems to be representative of the ‘so bad, it’s good’ phenomenon. The trailer can best be summed up in a phrase uttered by Soni herself, wherein she admits that the quartet is “actually ridiculous”.
