The Women’s Premier League second edition is in full swing this month, after a riveting auction event that unfolded with the destinies of 165 cricketers hanging in the balance and promised to be a game-changer in the world of women's cricket. Among the ace batters and bowlers hitting runs and smashing wickets, today we have a 20-year-old player from Delhi that everyone is rooting for.
It definitely gets a little intimidating playing among the legends of cricket like Smriti Mandhana, Jemimah Rodrigues, and Shafali Verma. However, 20-year-old Shweta Sehrawat is not here to get intimidated and instead intimidates the opponent with her all-rounder skills. The right-handed batter and right-arm off-break bowler got into UP Warriorz in 2023 for a whopping Rs 40 lakhs, a deal that is worth every penny, as evidenced by just a look at her cricket career. Here's where she began and where she got at such a young age.
Who Is Shweta Sehrawat?
Shweta Sehrawat always had a passion for cricket, and when she got a chance to play for Delhi's U-19 team at the age of 14, she readily took it. However, she did not make her domestic debut for the Delhi women's team until 2021, and the wait was worth it as in her very first match, she played against the Meghalaya team and made 118 runs.
Sehrawat was supposed to join the National Cricket Academy camp the same year, but the camp dates collided with her 12th-grade board exams. Instead of ditching her exams, she decided to manage it together with the camp and wrote to VVS Laxman, NCA chief, to allow her to join the camp after her exams, and he agreed.
Sehrawat joined the camp and scored a century in the second match, securing her a place in the zonal competition for the U-19 team. She later went on to secure two more centuries in the competition. She set the bar high for herself and her contemporaries, and in 2022, she made her T-20 debut against Manipur and scored a maiden fifty, leaving everyone amazed. The same year, she captained both Indian women's U-19 teams, Team A and Team B, in the Women's Under-19 quadrangular series and the Women's Under-19 Challenger Trophy, respectively.
Interestingly, Shweta Sehrawat was the top scorer in both tournaments and even had the highest strike rate in the quadrangular series. She was the vice-captain of the ICC U-19 Women's T-20 World Cup 2023 and became the first Indian to score a fifty at the tournament. Coached by former cricketer Dipti Dhyani, Sehrawat has been praised by ace cricketers like Mignon du Preez and Shafali Verma for her batting style and form. The audience is expecting to see the cricketer smash records in the WPL 2024.
