Radhika Apte and Nawazuddin Siddiqui have come together for a Netflix original crime-thriller titled Raat Akeli Hai. The trailer follows Siddiqui as a police officer investigating a high-profile murder case in a small town in India. Radhika Apte plays the role of the deceased's new bride, a prime suspect in the case. The film marks the directorial debut of Honey Trehan and is produced by Ronnie Screwvala. It also features Shweta Tripathi, Ila Arun, Shivani Raghuvanshi, Khalid Tyabji, Aditya Srivastava, Tigmanshu Dhulia, among others. Raat Akeli Hai is slated for a July 31 release on Netflix.
The Trailer
In the trailer, we see police officer Jatil Yadav, played by Nawazuddin Siddiqui, being assigned the task of investigating the murder of a wealthy local politician. The family of the politician, who is killed during his second wedding, calls it an accident. But Jatil is convinced that there's more to the case. During the course of the interrogation, he realises that each member of the family is hiding something. As the pieces of the puzzle begin to fall into place, Jatil faces resistance towards his investigation from a sinister politician and his own boss.
The trailer also shows Jatil slowly falling for Radhika Apte’s character, about whom we are not told much, except that she is the new mysterious bride of the deceased. Apte doesn’t get many dialogues in the trailer. Nonetheless, her character gives Jatil a few clues which he uses to try and solve the murder. But as every whodunnit thriller goes, nobody from the family can be ruled out as a suspect, not even Apte's character.

Expectations Running High
The trailer of the film follows Jatil not just into the deceased’s twisted past, but also seems to uncover the toxic patriarchy that is seamlessly woven into the fabrics of such powerful families in India. The way Apte’s character is shown to be treated by the rest of the household gives enough hints as to how this “other woman” is viewed by the victim’s family. The awkward Jatil is also seen to be battling with the inherent patriarchy within himself. His character follows a complete arc from sneering at Apte’s character for being the mistress-turned-second-wife to inclining towards her account of the events as he starts falling for her.
Both Radhika Apte and Nawazuddin Siddiqui are well-known names across OTT platforms. The film shall also mark their reunion after the 2015 film Manjhi- The Mountain Man. The two also starred in hit Netflix series Sacred Games. Apte has also appeared in the streaming service’s Lust Stories and Ghoul.

Describing the film, director Tehran said in a statement, “Crime thrillers have always been one of my favourite genres in cinema. Right from the early noir films of the 40s to Hitchcock's 'wrong man' films and Agatha Christie's whodunnits. I always wanted to tell a story that is grounded in the reality that I know, while also honouring the classical features of a noir thriller and that is what Raat Akeli Hai is”. With all of that in mind, one cannot help but be excited for this release!
