Nikhat Zareen Does It Again: Wins 2nd Successive Gold At World Championships

Indian champion boxer Nikhat Zareen made the country proud once again after winning gold at the Women's World Boxing Championships 2023 currently underway in New Delhi.

Indian champion boxer Nikhat Zareen has everyone got hooked with her performance at the ongoing World Championships in New Delhi. She has bagged a gold medal for the second time successfully by defeating Vietnam's Nguyen Thi Tam.

26-year-old Nikhat Zareen won against Patricia Alvarez with a marvellous lead of 5-0 in the 50 kg category and entered the quarter-finals of the IBA Women's Boxing Championships. The boxer, who hails from Nizamabad, Telangana, has now become champion for the second time in a row.

Zareen's father Mohammed Jameel Ahmed, the Arjuna Award recipient and the official ambassador of Nizamabad, was the one who introduced her to boxing and even trained her himself for a year before joining Sports Authority of India and training under IV Rao in 2009.

Nikhat Zareen Wins Gold: Who is the boxer?

  • Within a year of training at SAI, Nikhat Zareen became the Golden Best Boxer in 2010 at the Erode Nationals.
  • Since then, the boxer had won many landmark matches and brought home medals and pride.
  • At AIBA Women's Junior and Youth World Boxing Championship in 2011, she won the gold medal by defeating Turkey's Ulku Demir.
  • She has won medals in the Nations Cup International Boxing Tournament, Asian Championships, Youth World Boxing Championship and Strandja Memorial Boxing Tournament.
  • Zareen's feud with Mary Kom during the Tokyo Olympics selection process became a public matter. Zareen had always been inspired by Mary Kom but she was disappointed with the way she treated her as well. However, the two ace boxers patched up later on.
  • In 2022, Zareen once again displayed her skills at the IBA Women's World Boxing Championships by winning the gold in the 52 kg category and also by grabbing gold at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games, making India proud.
  • In 2015, Zareen was awarded the All India Inter-University Boxing Championship held in Jalandhar, Punjab with the title of Best Boxer. She also became the ambassador of her hometown, Nizamabad and the JFW award for Excellence in Sports in the year 2019. Her performance also won her the Arjuna Award in 2022.
  • The boxer will next be seen playing in the quarter-finals of the IBA Women's World Boxing Championships where she will be fighting to bring home the medal in the 50 kg category.
