NCW Organises Power Walk To Promote Women's Safety

In a bid to promote the cause of women's safety, the National Commission for Women (NCW) on Sunday organised a Power Walk from India Gate to Janpath. Led by NCW Chief Rekha Sharma, the walk saw the participation of hundreds of men and women holding placards.  SheThePeople.TV was the media partner for the event.

The event commenced at India Gate with students from Delhi University showcasing a play promoting the cause of women's safety. It also highlighted the role men can play in ensuring women are able to reclaim public spaces.

Jyoti, one of the students who took part in the play told SheThePeople.TV, "Living in Delhi, I always have this fear that I can get eve-teased or seen as prey. Through our play, we wanted to show everyone how girls feel when they step out.  Awareness is what we aim at spreading. " She also said that Nirbhaya's rapists should have been hanged much earlier.

Usha Chaumar, social activist and Padma Shri awardee, who was also the Chief Guest at the event told SheThePeople, "Women can go ahead in their lives only when they don't have to fear about their safety all the time."

Kunal from the same group emphasised on the pertinent role boys can play in ensuring that girls and women feel safe. "Boys will have to come forward and take the initiative. Parents discriminate between sons and daughters since childhood and this must end," he asserted.

NCW chief Rekha Sharma said at the event, "We were born as equals. It is the society that distinguishes between men and women. Men must also raise their voice for the cause of women's safety. Whether day or night, women have an equal right to claim their spaces everywhere and anywhere. We all should create an environment where women can feel physically safe." She also added that the walk was being organised at 15 other places simultaneously.

The march saw participants holding placards with powerful and thought-provoking slogans; We will fight against injustices against women, I want to be fearless and bold, I have the power to walk day or night, Show the power of power walk together..we are powerful.
