Meet Beth Mooney WPL 2024 Gujarat Giants Captain
Born In Shepparton, Victoria, 29-year-old Beth Mooney has always been a sporty child who loved playing tennis, soccer and many other games. Her journey in cricket began when she was almost 8 years old and was asked to fill in for her brother in the Kialla Lakes Cricket Club and after that, she became a regular in the team. When she was ten, her family moved from Shepparton to Hervey Bay, Queensland where every morning before school, she used to go bike riding and sea kayaking with her father. However, it wasn't before a year had passed in Queensland that she started playing cricket again.
She started wicket-keeping on the advice of her coach after seeing her catching skills in the Hervey Bay Zone Trials. She played as wicket-keeper for the Queensland girls' cricket team while simultaneously playing for the Hervey Bay's boys' team till the age of 18 as there wasn't a girl’s team in rural areas. By the age of 13, she was seen as a potential candidate for the national team. In 2010, she made her debut in the Women's National Cricket League and never looked back. In 2014, she left her studies to focus solely on her cricket career.
Her first match playing for Australia's national women's cricket team was played at Adelaide Oval in 2016 and in 2017 she bagged the Emerging Player of the Year and Player of the Year awards by ICC in T20 International. She was named the world's number one female batter in the Women's T20 International format after her amazing performance in T20 World Cup 2020. In 2021, Wisden named Mooney the Leading Woman Cricketer in the World based on her previous year’s performance.
During the WPL auction in 2023, Beth Mooney went to Gujarat Giants at a rate of Rs. 2 crores becoming the fifth most expensive player of the tournament and second most expensive in her team.
