Strangest Reasons Women are told to Get Married in India

Marriages are an inseparable part of our social milieu. Indians want to get married, want to see others getting married and aspire for their kids to get married. Marriage, it seems, is the ultimate truth we all have to bear with.

But with increasing urbanisation and financial and social empowerment of women, one wonders if this institute of marriage is even relevant. It will be interesting to know how our millennial girls perceive marriage. Do they want to get married at all? If yes, what is their idea of a good marriage? If no, how do they deal with nagging relatives? And worse, what are the strange reasons they got to get hitched?

SheThePeople.TV spoke to some women to know the bizarre reasons they have been given to get married.

Save yourself from getting bored

Talking about how she was cajoled into giving marriage a thought, Kriti Dwivedi from Delhi University recalls how she once revealed that she never wanted to get married. The revelation was followed by a flurry of responses from aunties. The most bizarre of them was "You will get very bored in life. Living alone is not easy. You need a partner to survive. How will you live alone? Anybody can live alone, but few people can make a relationship work."

“People in today’s life usually open their Netflix accounts or just call their friends or read a book to pass their time and not get bored. Why do I need to get married to stop myself from getting bored when there are other ‘less drastic and extreme’ things to do to entertain yourself?” she quipped.

Can't escape

Rashi Goel who has just completed her Masters from Economics says that she is yet to receive any strange reason for getting married. The only fact stated to her has been “Sabko Karni Padti Hai.”

To free the father of debt

Karishma Verma, working with a reputed airline says that advancing age of girls is often seen as a deterrent for girls' marriages. A father will remain indebted throughout his life if he doesn't get his daughter married off and this has been told to her several times.

For financial security

Abhidha Sharma working as a freelance photographer says that marrying for a secure future is one of the strangest reasons society gives to compel girls to tie the knot. “As if we can't earn and fend for ourselves,” she asserts.

Daughters can't stay at home forever

“Our primary role is to nurture the next generation. Daughters can't stay at home forever. They have to go to 'their' home’” are some phrases she listens to every other day, says Ishita Chikkara working as a clerical checker in Delhi.
