When billionaires and successful entrepreneurs write about how waking up every day at five am has led them to their success, it was sounds extremely inspiring. Mornings are meant for quiet contemplation, and waking up early is helpful to anyone wanting a better quality of life. As a result, everyone has tried, at least at some point in their lives, to become a morning person. However, most of these attempts result in a failure as we end up losing the battle to start our day early to our alarm clocks. This is because these attempts are made without paying attention to the essentials.
But Why Become A Morning Person?
As aforementioned, mornings are relatively quieter. This is not only just in the literal sense of the lack of noise but also the lack of chaos. As your day begins, work piles up. Schedules, meetings, assignments, classes are all waiting for you. Perhaps you have children who go to school, and you must get them ready to go. Needless to say, as the morning progresses, the number of responsibilities you must fulfill are endless.
The first most important thing to do is to have a goal. Ask yourself, why do I want to wake up early? What am I looking to get out of it?
However, at dawn, the world is still slowly waking up. No one is expecting much from you. Thus waking up at 5 am means you have a few hours all to yourself. What you do in these hours is entirely up to you. You could give yourself time to settle in, grab a coffee and journal. You could meditate, go for a run or finally start working on that self-project you never have time for. Everything that we never get to do because of the demands of everyday life, work, and family get in the way – these can be achieved by waking up earlier. But how? How do we wake up earlier, when the very thought makes us feel groggy? Here are some foolproof ways.
Know Why You’re Doing It
For an adult who has never been a morning person, waking up early is hard. There’s no sugar-coating it – it is straight-up work. The first most important thing to do is to have a goal. Ask yourself, why do I want to wake up early? What am I looking to get out of it? Do I want more time for myself? Is there something I want to work on? More importantly how crucial is that goal to my success or well-being?

When you ask these questions, you will realize what your ultimate goal is. Maybe you can achieve inner peace or fitness through a rigourous working out, meditating and writing a journal. Some people get up early to work on a project or a side business, which is difficult to accommodate in the daily schedule. Maybe you’ve always wanted to write a blog. Whatever your reason may be, it is important to know it.
Go To Sleep Early
It sounds overrated, but the simplest way of waking up early is going to bed early. If you’re trying to wake up at five am every day, but stay awake until midnight, it’s not going to work out. The goal is not to force yourself out of bed, though that might be the case at first. What you want to achieve is a routine where you’re happy to wake up early and excited to begin your day. That doesn’t happen without enough sleep. Adults need six to eight hours of sleep every night, so if you want to become a morning person, try sleeping by 10 pm.

Plan Things The Night Before
Much of the anxiety and unwillingness around waking up in the morning comes from a place of not feeling ready. It’s why so many people feel the dread that surrounds Mondays. However, this has a relatively easy fix. Planning things ahead relieves you of a large part of that dread. The night before, plan your outfit for class or work. Know what you’ll make for breakfast, keep it ready – or consider an option like overnight oats. Be aware of your schedule, know your plan. You could jot things down or set reminders for the coming day so that you don't miss a crucial engagement or forget to run an important errand. When you know that things are ready for you when you wake up, it’ll be easier to become a morning person.
Move Your Body
Plenty of people enjoy exercise and make it a part of their daily routine. If you’re waking up early, try scheduling a workout in the morning, right after you wake up. Exercise not only releases feel-good hormones in your body but also will jolt you awake. It gets your heart pumping and you’ll feel fresher and more alert than you did before. Exercising in the morning, according to science, is also much better than exercising in the evening. So take advantage of your extra hours, get some workout in, and you’ll be on your way to becoming a morning person.
