Just yesterday actor Deepika Padukone was in news because when asked by airport security personnel to provide her Id, she complied without any fuss. Today, sister of actor Janhavi Kapoor, Khushi is trending on social media because she was spotted yawning at the security check.  Why is it news when celebs behave like regular folks or even humans? Should Padukone throw tantrums on being asked to provide Id? Do we expect Khushi Kapoor to be chirpy and energetic even at something as mundane as a security check? Or do star kids not yawn?

So, when a security officer asks you for your Id at the airport, you hand it over to them, even if you are Padukone.

Perhaps this gaze which highlights their regular folk behaviour is a new found boon to us from the social media and paparazzi. Back in the nineties and even before that, celebrities like movie stars had a certain aura about them. They seemed distant and glossy, almost ethereal. We saw them exclusively on silver screen or on our television, at their glamorous best, doing things which no regular and sane person did in real life. They would dance around trees, sing soulful ballads brimming with emotions, beat goons to pulp and talk the way you can only do in films.

Back in the nineties and even before that, celebrities like movie stars had a certain aura about them. They seemed distant and glossy, almost ethereal.

Outside of that, we were privy to their lives through film magazines and newspapers. Gossip columns and curated interview were our only windows to peek into their personal affairs. So over the years, we have ceased to believe that celebrities are also people. To us they are aliens, or other-worldly, who do not live the regular lives that we do. And while social media has given unprecedented access to these celebs, for us they still remain larger than life figures. Any glimpse of human behaviour on their part shocks us. They stand in cues to vote, show Id security staff at the airport or just yawn, and we are mesmerised.

So the hooplah over Deepika's humble behaviour and Khushi Kapoor's yawn is a more telling commentary on our perception than celebrity conduct. Am pretty sure if a public figure were to so much as even open the door for herself, it'll be a news for us. Because sadly these day, what we like to consume becomes news over what we must know.
