The much-awaited trailer for the third and final season of the web series Dark dropped today on Netflix. “I’ll help you find the origin,” it begins. The setting looks as magnificent as ever, and so does the plot structure. Seems like season three will be as enthralling and delightful a ride as the last two seasons were! The line "beginning is the ending" appears in the trailer hinting that the show might end where it began.
Dark has intricate plot designs and too complex a set of characters. It leaves viewers in a heady maze, until they understand the fascinating connections.
Dark is a German show that first premiered in 2017. It is created by Baran Bo Odar Jantje Friese. On its release, it was positioned as a counterpart to Strangers Things, which is another blockbuster sci-fi series on Netflix. Both shows have prominent storylines set in the 1980s and feature kids who wander about a small town where weird things are happening. But anybody who has watched both the series will agree that Dark has far intricate plot designs and too complex a set of characters. It leaves viewers in a heady maze, until they understand the fascinating connections.
About the Plot
The show starts with Ulrich Nielsen, a police officer who is cheating on his wife with a woman whose husband commits suicide in the show’s earliest moments. This woman’s son, Jonas, is part of a gang of teenagers who venture into the woods outside their town. While they’re out there, Ulrich’s youngest, Mikkel also disappears, leading the police to wonder if somebody is targeting local youths. Some of the town’s older residents mutter how the circumstances of the disappearance are similar to cases from 33 years ago. Next, a mysterious hooded figure is seen looking at a newspaper clip reading “Where is Mikkel?”. The same figure crosses out the first word and rewrites the headline as “When is Mikkel?”

From here the show takes the cliched time-travelling plot and gives it an ingenious twist. There is a wormhole that allows people to travel 33 years into the past or the future. The show sprawls across the years 1952, 1986, and 2019 and follows the intertwining lives of four families in the fictional town of Winden. Season two increases the juggling act, by leaping several months ahead in all three timelines — to 2020, 1987, and 1954. It also adds two more timelines in 1921 and 2053 (the latter of which is a post-apocalyptic mess).
The New Trailer (Spoiler Alert!)
If you haven’t seen the series but intend to, this might be a good time to stop reading for ahead lie major spoilers. The new trailer gives a slice of explanation to the extremely confusing season two cliff-hanger. The last episode of the last season saw Martha Nielsen being shot dead. Meanwhile, the show's protagonist Jonas Kahnwald fails to prevent the apocalypse in his town. But a second Martha comes in to save everything at the last moment, which points towards the existence of parallel realities within the show. Now, the season three trailer reveals that this new black-haired Martha is actually the protagonist of the parallel universe. She has seemingly also gone through the same twisted series of events in her world as Jonas. In the new season, Jonas and Martha will together search for the source of all the events that unfolded in their world.

The popularity of the show perhaps stems from the existential questions it raises about time and its effects upon human nature. The show talks a lot about what links past to present, and the same to future, and how all three are interconnected. The trailer of the third season ends with an eerie tik-tok sound of the clock. It almost seems as if there might be a final showdown against God i.e. Time. But in an ironic twist of fate, only time can tell whether this assumption is true or not.
Dark season 3 will stream on Netflix from June 27, 2020.
