The recently-released trailer for Netflix’s new sci-fi drama series Away tells us that sometimes to reach for the stars, we must leave home behind. It stars two-time Oscar-winning actress Hilary Swank as the American astronaut Emma Green, who’s the commander of NASA’s first mission to Mars. Away is created by Andrew Hinderaker. Jason Katims, of Friday Night Lights and Parenthood fame, is the show’s executive producer, with Jessica Goldberg (The Path) serving as showrunner. The 10-episode series is all set to premiere on Netflix on September 4.
The Trailer
"The only thing I've ever know for sure in my life, is that I wanted to be on the first mission to Mars," astronaut Emma Green (Hilary Swank) proudly states at the beginning of the trailer. As she prepares to lead an international crew on the first mission to Mars, Emma tries to reconcile her decision to leave behind her husband Matt (Josh Charles) and teenage daughter Lex (Talitha Bateman) when they need her the most. We see Emma saying goodbye to them before blasting off into space; “It’s only three years,” she laughingly tells Matt before leaving.
But holding a family together is tough… especially when the woman (who is both a wife and a mother) is a few million miles away. It’s not surprising then that this ride to Mars gets a little more than bumpy: we see Matt suddenly losing consciousness and ending up bed-ridden in the hospital, while the astronauts up there are shown to have plenty of problems of their own.
And as for a young Lex, as if having her mom in space for most of high school wasn’t hard enough, she now also has to single-handedly deal with her father’s unexpected medical issues. “Mom I love you. Why did you have to do this?” she asks in a rather emotional moment that is bound to raise some goosebumps for viewers watching the trailer. But more than any of that, Away seems to be telling the story of a woman astronaut who on her way of becoming a successful commander of a space mission, all the while balancing her family and home, even from outer space.

What We Know
The series is “a thrilling, emotional drama on an epic scale that celebrates the incredible advancements humans can achieve and the personal sacrifices they must make along the way,” per the official description. For Hilary Swank, playing the role of Emma Green was like a dream come true. In an interview, she revealed, “I wanted to be an astronaut before I wanted to be an actor, which was about the age of 9. It still has the same feeling for me now as it did then, the whole idea of something bigger than us and the unknown. I still would love to go to space someday, but being an actor and playing an astronaut is second best." It thus is left for us to see whether the series lives up to the expectation it has created with its trailer.
