What Is Husband Stitch?

Immediately following childbirth, a surgical procedure known as the husband stitch, or daddy stitch, is performed. In an attempt to make the vagina feel tighter, the doctor repairs the vaginal laceration by sewing on an additional stitch.

The idea that a person's vagina may become looser or change after giving birth is not based in fact; rather, it is a product of medical sexism and misogyny. Yes, the husband stitch has no medicinal benefits.

It is absolutely usual for someone to have an episiotomy or develop a persistent tear during childbirth. Some medical professionals have even been known to add one extra stitch during the repair process just for the benefit of an adult male, believing that the tightening would enhance the male's sexual pleasure during penetration. Because the husband stitch is so needless and invasive, some have drawn comparisons between it and female genital mutilation (FGM).

The main problem with the husband stitch is that it frequently occurs without the expectant mother's knowledge or consent. Family physicians have been known to wink and gaze sideways at the patient's spouse while adding an extra stitch. Because of this kind of covert behaviour, the practice has become nearly tough to eradicate.
