This day celebrates women's rights to privacy, education, and control over their sexual and reproductive health. It provides a platform to advocate for reforms that promote gender equality, empower women worldwide, and ensure a healthy and fulfilling life for all women. Here’s everything you need to know.

The International Day of Action for Women’s Health in 2024 will be observed on Tuesday, May 28. This year's theme is "Mobilising in Critical Times of Threats and Opportunities," focusing on empowering women to make independent decisions free from coercion and discrimination.

The day emphasises the importance of inclusion, accessibility, and availability of sexual and reproductive health information and services for everyone, including women, girls, and gender-diverse individuals.

History and Significance of the International Day of Action for Women’s Health

The day was established in 1987 during the Women’s Meeting in Costa Rica by the Latin American and Caribbean Women’s Health Network (LACWHN) to raise awareness and advocate for women’s health rights.

The Women’s Global Network for Reproductive Rights (WGNRR) has promoted this cause globally, focusing on improving healthcare for women and addressing critical issues such as abortion rights, HIV/AIDS, poverty, sexual autonomy, and access to contraceptives.

This day is a poignant reminder that women deserve to live healthy, happy lives, free from abuse, discrimination, and violations of their rights. It highlights the ongoing need to fight for gender equality and the right to make autonomous decisions about one’s body and health.

In today's world, where women’s rights are under constant threat, it is more important than ever to stand up for these fundamental rights. Ensuring that women have access to the necessary information and services regarding their sexual and reproductive health is crucial for their well-being and empowerment.

The International Day of Action for Women’s Health serves as a call to action for governments, organisations, and individuals to work together to protect and promote women’s health rights. It encourages us to create a world where every woman can make informed decisions about her body and health, free from fear and discrimination.

By highlighting these issues and advocating for change, we can help build a more equitable and just world for all women. This day is not only a celebration of the progress made but also a reminder of the work that still needs to be done to achieve true gender equality and health justice for all women.
