As a woman in my 40s, I’ve spent a considerable amount of time understanding the nutritional needs that best support my health and well-being. One significant aspect of this journey has been recognising the importance of protein in my diet, especially as I’ve experienced hormonal changes that have impacted my hair and overall vitality.
The other day I was browsing through Instagram and an ad popped in saying it was a protein for women’s health. I thought to myself why do women need a different protein? I had no answer so I started to discuss it with friends who are doctors, and also dieticians.
Through my exploration, I’ve come to realise that the protein needs of women differ from those of men, and this distinction is crucial when choosing the right protein powder. Do not buy whatever, buy what’s crafted for your body.

Why do you need protein…any idea?
Protein, according to medical research, is a fundamental macronutrient essential for various bodily functions, including muscle repair, immune support, and hormone production. For women, particularly, protein plays a crucial role in maintaining muscle mass, supporting reproductive health, and managing the effects of hormonal changes. Read that again - protein is key for hormonal changes!
Hormones and protein intake are closely linked, as proteins play a crucial role in the synthesis, regulation, and functioning of hormones. Hormones are chemical messengers that regulate various physiological processes in the body, including metabolism, growth, and reproductive health. Proteins, which are composed of amino acids, are essential for producing these hormones.
My Personal Journey with Protein
When I first started experiencing significant hair loss due to hormonal changes, I felt overwhelmed and frustrated. My hair, which had always been thick and healthy, began to thin and lose its lustre. After researching and consulting with a nutritionist, I learned that increasing my protein intake could help mitigate these effects.
But was this about my hair? No. Turns out I have low protein, like 90% of Indian women, and that had played havoc in my body. From immunity, aches, dull skill and terrible hair fall, everything was linked to protein!!
