There are people who can’t start their days without a freshly brewed cup of coffee. While there are a few potential benefits to this ‘elixir’ of life, drinking coffee has certain downsides to it, especially when it comes to our skin.
Experts believe that too much caffeine can have a lasting, detrimental effect on your body and skin. Here's a look at 7 reasons why coffee is bad for your skin and body due to the caffeine present in the beverage.
- It is a well-known scientific fact that caffeine causes dehydration. When this happens, it leads to a toxic build up in the body affecting your skin. Experts warn that drinking too much coffee can cause your skin to wrinkle prematurely and become lax with time.
- If your go-to drink is a latte or cappuccino then dairy could also be impacting your skin. Milk and dairy block the production of sebum in the body and glues dead skin cells together, which is bad for your skin.
- If lately your skin has been showing problematic signs, you can cut off dairy from your diet as an elimination test and see if the problem persists or go away.
- If you rely on caffeine to stay up late and work over hours, you might wanna cut back on your consumption. As caffeine makes your body feel alert but at the same time also leads to a heightened stress response. Cortisol, one of the stress hormones, may surge the amount of oil secreted by your sebaceous glands, making you more prone to breakouts.
- Digested sugar permanently attaches to the collagen in your skin through a process called glycation. So if you like sugar in your cup of latte or cappuccino, it could also be the reason behind your skin showing signs of ageing, acne or rosacea.
- Experts also warn that exceeding four or five cups of a caffeine filled drink can cause migraines and jitteriness. To limit the negative effects of caffeine, between every coffee or tea you drink, aim to have a glass of water and sooner you will realise that you are drinking less of it. Or simply substitute it with a herbal drink.
- If you have been a coffee addict for a long time, missing your coffee during the usual hours can cause irritability. Once you are hooked, headaches can occur as a symptom of withdrawal affecting your day and productivity.
- If you are drinking anything other than black coffee, chances are that you may be consuming more calories that you realise. This can be the reason why you are gaining weight. Nothing wrong with putting on weight but one should be aware that coffee consumption may lead to it. Your luxury cup of latte alone contains more than 500 calories. Multiply it by 2 to 3 times a day and you are consuming approx. 1500 calories without taking into account any meals.
