Hormones play a critical role in women’s health - from menstruation to fertility and beyond. Hormones are chemical messengers that regulate many bodily functions, including growth, metabolism, and reproductive functions. Today, due to lifestyle factors like stress, diet, and environment the hormone balance in women is directly impacted. While medical science has made great progress in this space and medical diagnosis is required, just relying on Western medicine is not sufficient.
Research shows that holistic practices like yoga have many profound benefits for disorders like hormonal imbalances. Hormonal imbalances often lead to menstrual issues like painful periods, irregular cycles, PCOS, infertility, or early menopause.
How can yoga help?
Yoga functions on the primary principle of restoring homeostasis/balance in the body. The practice includes asanas, pranayama and meditation practices which offer a 360-degree or holistic solution. Yoga asanas help in stimulating and relaxing the entire body. For eg forward bending asanas help detoxify the body and promote better blood circulation in the digestive system, reproductive system, and endocrine system which aids in healing and restoring the functioning of the hormonal system in the body. PCOS and several menstrual disorders which are very common nowadays are caused due to poor digestion, insulin resistance and poor functioning of the reproductive organs. All of which can be managed with yoga.
Asana practice also helps in relaxing the nervous system and body thereby reducing stress levels. High levels of stress have a direct impact on the hormone system of our body. One of the leading causes of infertility is stress levels & needs to be managed effectively.
Pranayama or breathing practices which are an intricate part of yoga practice can play a huge role in balancing hormones in our bodies. Simple and powerful breathing techniques like diaphragmatic breathing and Nadi shuddhi help increase the oxygen levels in our bodies, make us calmer and increase prana levels in the body. Which in turn promotes balance in the endocrine system.
Finally, meditative practice aids in deep healing of the body and also activates the master hormonal glands of the body. For example, Ajna chakra meditation or third eye meditation is associated with the pituitary gland, known as the "master gland." It is located at the base of the brain, below the hypothalamus, and is responsible for producing and releasing hormones that regulate various body functions. When the Ajna Chakra is open and balanced, it stimulates the pituitary gland, leading to optimal hormone production and release.
