The recommended safe amount of turmeric that you can consume in a day is one teaspoon. Now during COVID, many of us increased the total consumption of turmeric in the quest to improve our immunity. But sometimes haldi benefits can reverse when take in large quantities. If you take turmeric in its natural form or in the form of supplements in higher amounts, it can have potential negative side-effects on your health. Here are 5 reasons why turmeric is bad for your health:

  • Nausea and diarrhoea

Turmeric is known to promote digestive health but it can also cause irritation when consumed in large amounts. In a study discussing the discovery and key biological activities of curcumin, some participants trying to observe the use of turmeric for cancer treatment had to drop out because their digestion was negatively affected. This is because curcumin in turmeric can cause irritation in the gastrointestinal tract.

  • It thins your blood

The curcumin in turmeric has been shown to reduce blood platelet function. Important functions of turmeric like lowering cholesterol and blood pressure may have something to do with the way turmeric reacts with your blood.

Turmeric is bad for people who take blood-thinning drugs like warfarin (Coumadin) and they should avoid consuming large doses of haldi.

  • Iron deficiency

Studies have shown that some compounds in turmeric bind to iron. This could lead to a decrease in the body’s ability to absorb iron from food, which could lead to iron deficiency. Thus, people with iron deficiency should especially be careful not to consume turmeric beyond the recommended levels as it could decrease the body's ability to absorb iron.

  • Increased Risk of Kidney Stones

Too much turmeric is bad because it can enhance the risk of developing kidney stones because of the oxalates in it. The oxalates are known to bind with calcium to form calcium oxalate, which is insoluble. Which can lead to kidney stones. Therefore, it is best to avoid turmeric if you have kidney problems.

  • May cause allergy

You may experience rashes, shortness of breath, and outbreaks if you are allergic to certain compounds present in turmeric. Allergic reactions can be caused by both ingestion and skin contact. As turmeric is part of the same family as ginger, you are more likely to have a reaction if you’re allergic to ginger. If you are allergic to yellow food colouring, you may also be allergic to turmeric.
