Stranger Things stars Mille Bobby Brown and Noah call out netizens asking to label the character Will's sexuality on the show. As a society why are we so obsessed with labels? Stranger Things actors have spoken up against this need to speculate about everything, questioning the societal obsession with labels.
Why Is Will Byers Sexuality So Much Speculated ?
Addressing the speculations around Will's sexuality, Schnapp said- “I feel like they never really address it or blatantly say how Will is. I think that’s the beauty of it, that it’s just up to the audience’s interpretation, if it’s Will kind of just refusing to grow up and growing up slower than his friends, or if he is really gay.”
Millie Bobby Brown, who plays Eleven, added: “Can I just say, it’s 2022 and we don’t have to label things. I think what’s really nice about Will’s character is that he’s just a human being going through his own personal demons and issues. So many kids out there don’t know, and that’s OK. That’s OK to not know. And that’s OK not to label things.”
Schnapp also added: “I find that people do reach to put a label on him and just want to know, so badly, like, ‘Oh, and this is it.’ He’s just confused and growing up. And that’s what it is to be a kid.”
In the newly released season, Will's character is shown being upset with Mike for not staying in touch after he moved to California. He is also seen withdrawing himself when a girl flirts with him in class when he is doing a project on Alan Turing, who is also a gay mathematician, and this small detail in the series has led the fans to speculate and come up with theories about his sexuality.
