Who Was Amarjot Kaur? What Role She Played In Chamkila's Band

Amarjot Kaur, the female vocalist in Chamkila's band, played a pivotal role in shaping his musical journey. Recommended by Punjabi singer Kuldeep Manak, Kaur joined Chamkila's band and soon became a sensation alongside him. Their successful partnership extended beyond the stage, as they tied the knot and welcomed a son named Jaiman Chamkila.

Both Amarjot Kaur and Amar Singh Chamkila had prior marriages before their union. Kaur had separated from her ex-husband to pursue her passion for singing, while Chamkila was previously married to Gurmail Kaur, with whom he had two daughters. Despite their pasts, Kaur and Chamkila found love and artistic synergy in each other's company.

On March 8, 1988, tragedy struck as Chamkila and Amarjot were ruthlessly gunned down in Mehsampur, Punjab, just moments before a scheduled performance. Alongside them, two members of their band also lost their lives in the senseless act of violence. Gurmail revealed, "Chamkila used to visit after one or two days. He did not bring Amarjot along. Sometimes, she used to come." She also mentioned their domestic dynamics, stating, "I would start preparing rotis; she would prepare the sabji. There were times when she used to say, ‘I don't know how to cook a sabji; can I make rotis?' But she wasn't good with rotis either."

Regarding her relationship with Amarjot Kaur, Gurmail recalled, "When someone visits your home, you have to talk to them. I used to talk to her for the sake of my husband." Despite the complexities, Amar Singh Chamkila continued to support Gurmail and her children financially, even after marrying Amarjot. Their tragic demise marked the end of an era in Punjabi music.
