Ghazal singer Bhupinder Singh, known for crooning classics like Naam Gum Jayega and Dil Dhoondta Hai, died on Monday due to suspected colon cancer and COVID-19-related complications at a Mumbai hospital, his wife Mitali  Mukherjee confirmed. He was 82.

According to Mitali, the veteran artist was admitted to the hospital following a urine infection, wherein he was diagnosed with COVID-19.

“He was admitted to the hospital eight to ten days ago as he had some infection in the urine. After tests were performed, he tested positive for COVID-19. He passed away at around 7.45 pm due to suspected colon cancer and had COVID-19,” Mitali told Press Trust of India.

Who is Mitali Mukherjee?

Mukherjee was born in Mymensingh, Bangladesh and began her formal training in classical music under Pandit Mithun Dey. She also studied music at the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda.

She married Bhupinder Singh in 1983 and started residing in Mumbai. "The cultural change did not happen after marriage. I had to adapt to the new culture when I went to study in Baroda. Before even meeting my husband Bhupinder Singh, I was his fan. My brother once bought one of his songs and told me to hear his voice; it truly mesmerized me. I never thought he would be my husband," she once told in an interview.

In the 1980s, the duo emerged as a force in ghazal singing. She helped Singh in adapting to the requirements of stage shows. The duo regaled millions during the New Year programmes of Doordarshan.

"When I used to sing Nazrul or Folk music, I found it hard to make my audience connect to my songs, but when I started singing Ghazals there was an instant spark. Everyone appreciated me and slowly I matured as a Ghazal singer. My husband was always busy with movies and he is not only an excellent singer but also a superb guitarist. He played in many RD Burman productions. After our marriage, we were offered to sing together and the audience accepted us," she added.

Mitali won the National Film Award in Bangladesh in 1982 for the song Ei Dunia Ekhon to Ar for the film Dui Poishar Alta. She served as the judge of the television shows Sa Re Ga Ma Pa and Shera Kontho.
