Bridgerton surprised us all with the introduction of the new Indian family in season 2. The Sharma family of Bridgerton was written into the show, deviating from the book ' The Viscount who loved me' where an Indian background was provided to the Sheffields.
British Indian actors such as Simone Ashley and Charithra Chandra were cast to play significant roles. The connection to the regency era of London comes from the Matriarch of the Sharma family, Lady Mary Sheffield Sharma.
Who is Mary Sheffield Sharma?
Mary Sheffield Sharma played by Shelley Conn, acts as the royal connection of the Sharma Family. Shelly Conn hails from London with an Anglo-Indian Lineage. Conn attended Queen Mary's College and holds a degree from Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art. Conn trained at Bretton Hall before she started her career in 2020. Bridgerton season 2 opens with Kate and Edwina Sharma arriving in London, with their mother Mary Sharma, as Lady Danbury's guests. It is revealed to the audience that Mary and Lady Danbury go way back.
Here's everything you need to know about Mary Sheffield Sharma.
Lady Mary Sheffield Sharma was the daughter of the Sheffield family and was a prominent part of the high society alongside Lady Violet and Queen Charlotte in Mayfair. She was also once named Diamond of the season, by the Queen herself. Mary falls in love with a widowed Indian man and loves his daughter Kate, as her own. After being abandoned from her own family for marrying a man of a lesser statute, Lady Mary moves to Bombay, India with her husband and starts a family there, away from London, thus becoming Lady Mary Sharma.
However, many years after Mr. Sharma's death, Lady Mary moves back to London and is welcomed by Lady Danbury. Thus begins the triangle love story of the two sisters Kate and Edwina, Mary's daughter with Mr. Sharma, with Anthony Bridgerton. Lady Sharma's marriage was a scandalous one, as she married a commoner against her parents' wishes. Her onscreen presence has gained her a nickname called Mama Sharma, as she portrays the character with such ease. She has now returned to present her daughters to the Mayfair Marriage mart that she was once a part of.
Lady Mary Sharma has secrets of her own, that are revealed to the audience as the season progresses. Even though she doesn't do much throughout the season, she stands her ground and doesn't get looked over as a bystander. She acts as the key that holds the family together throughout season 2. Conn definitely does justice to the character in Bridgerton.
