Assamese actor Aimee Baruah made a notable impression at the Cannes 2024 red carpet by proudly displaying her heritage through her attire. Wearing a traditional Muga silk saree, Baruah brought the essence of Assamese culture to an international stage. This choice highlighted the beauty and elegance of Assamese clothing and emphasised the importance of cultural representation at prestigious events.

Assamese Actor Wears Traditional Saree At Cannes 2024

Baruah wore a Muga silk saree, known for its natural golden hue and durability, symbolises Assam's rich textile heritage. Her saree featured intricate handwoven designs and vibrant colours typical of Assamese textiles. The saree also adorned with a two-hundred-year-old motif, was complemented by traditional Assamese accessories such as the Gamkharu wristband, Assamese gamosa, Riha, and Kopou Phul (foxtail orchids) in her hair bun. These elements symbolised her deep connection to her roots and earned admiration from around the world.

In a heartfelt message accompanying her photos, Baruah expressed her pride in representing her Assamese heritage at Cannes for the third time. She emphasised that her presence at the event was not just about showcasing fashion but also about advocating for cultural recognition and appreciation on a global scale. Her embodiment of Assamese culture served as an inspiration for others to embrace their heritage proudly and promote cultural diversity in all spheres of life.

Who is Aimee Baruah?

Aimee Baruah is a highly accomplished National Film Award-winning actor and director from Assam, India. She made her directorial debut with the Dimasa-language film Semkhor, which won two National Awards at the 68th National Film Awards.

Aimee gained international recognition as the first actor from Assam to walk the red carpet at the 75th Cannes Film Festival. Her latest documentary film, Screaming Butterflies, received the prestigious "Silver Conch" award at the 17th Mumbai International Film Festival (MIFF).

Aimee has also served as a jury member at the 53rd International Film Festival of India (IFFI) and was part of the steering committee at the 54th IFFI in Goa. In 2024, she became the first Assamese female actor to win the "Best Actor (Female) in a Leading Role" award at the Filmfare Awards Assamese.

Since starting her career at the age of fourteen, Aimee has starred in over twenty-nine feature-length films, including several National Award-winning projects. She holds a master's degree in sociology and a gold medal in economics. Currently, she is pursuing her PhD at Gauhati University, focusing on the films of singer, musician, and filmmaker Dr. Bhupen Hazarika.

This year's Cannes Film Festival was truly remarkable for Indian attendees, offering more than just opportunities to represent brands or screen films. It was a celebration of personal culture and heritage. Actor Ratna Pathak Shah accompanied Naseeruddin Shah, presenting themselves as a regal couple for the screening of Naseeruddin’s film Manthan. Actor Chhaya Kadam honoured her late mother by attending her film's screening dressed in her late mother's saree and jewellery. Influencer Nancy Tyagi showcased her talent by wearing self-designed and stitched clothes.
