Waiting To Watch The Kashmir Files Online? Here's What You Should Know

The Kashmir Files by writer and director Vivek Agnihotri became grabbed national attention after its recent release. Based on true events of the early 90s, it draws a fictional storyline to show the exodus turned genocide of Kashmiri Pandits.

Though the movie is heavily criticised for bringing new theories to the established history, it became the highest-grossing film in the Hindi film industry in 2022.

The Kashmir Files was recently screened at the 53rd edition of the International Film Festival of India. At the closing ceremony of the festival, jury head, Israeli filmmaker Nadav Lapid criticised Agnihotri's Hindi on stage, calling it 'propaganda'.

He said he was “shocked” and “disturbed” by the movie’s inclusion in the competitive section. “There were 15 films in the international competition — the front window of the festival. Fourteen out of them had cinematic qualities… and evoked vivid discussions. We were, all of us, disturbed and shocked by the 15th film, The Kashmir Files. That felt to us like a propaganda, vulgar movie, inappropriate for an artistic competitive section of such a prestigious film festival,” Lapid said.

The plot of this film often takes you back and forth to the situation of the 1990s and the modern India of 2020. Islamic militants take over the beautiful crown state of Kashmir and starts killing Pandits of that region in cold blood.

Darshan Kumar And Anupam Kher have brilliantly done their parts as the leading protagonists. Pushkar (Anupam Kher) dies and all his friends pay their tribute to him and recall the chilling and inhumane scenes from the past, labeling it as “genocide’’.

Release of the Kashmir Files

There were many concerns over the portrayal of the Muslim community in the movie. There were many scenes that had to be removed from the film in order to release it. The theatrical release of the Kashmir Files took place on March 11 2022. The number of screens was later increased to 4000 from earlier 630 screens.

Mithun Chakraborty, Chinmay Mandelkar, Bhasha Sumbli, Atul Srivastava, and other supporting actors are also responsible for the success of The Kashmir Files.
