Derry Girls is inspired by real-life events of writer-creator Lisa McGee's teenage experiences during the era of Troubles in Ireland. The show narrates the story of a young girl and her cousins as they tread through the struggles and adventures of high school life. The show cast includes Saoirse-Monica Jackson, Louisa Harland, Nicola Coughlan, Jamie-Lee O’Donnell, Dylan Llewellyn, Tara Lynne O’Neill and Kathy Kiera Clarke among other stars.
The show had been renewed earlier in April 2019. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the filming dates had to be pushed further. Reportedly, the production for the upcoming Season 3 began in October 2021. Derry Girls originally aired on UK broadcaster Channel 4 and was later included by Netflix. It has amassed popularity among audience for its interesting plot and characters.
Derry Girls Season 3 will include the upcoming adventures that the characters will face as they get closer to adulthood. The new season is expected to have six episodes. Creator McGee revealed that the show was scripted to be a three-part series. Speaking to The Guardian, McGee mentions, "I really wanted them to feel like girls from Derry, not people doing accents. There’s a punk attitude to teenage girls in Derry. They’ve got a very bold sense of humour. They’re fearless. You have to have that sort of swagger."
Earlier, actor Nicola Coughlan also tipped her fans off to the budding romance between characters Erin and James.
Derry Girls New Season Release Date
The trailer for the series was released on March 30, along with the premiere date. According to the trailer's synopsis, "They're back, and they're better than ever! Here's your first look at the final series of Derry Girls, which premieres on Channel 4 on Tuesday, April 12th. " As a result, you may watch Derry Girls seasons 1, 2, and now 3 on Channel 4. However, Season 2's debut on Netflix has been postponed following Netflix's announcement on July 14, 2020, after it was temporarily posted to the streaming site.
Actors Jamie-Lee O’Donnell and Ian McElhinney along with Saoirse-Monica Jackson, Louisa Harland, Nicola Coughlan among others will expectedly reprise their roles in Derry Girls Season 3.
