Waheeda Rehman Recalls Taking Stand Against Revealing Costume

Waheeda Rehman recalled a past incident when director Raj Khosla became upset as she declined to wear the outfits he had chosen. This incident occurred during the filming of Solva Saal, a movie in which she starred alongside Dev Anand, with Raj Khosla directing. At that time, Rehman was a newcomer in the film industry, and her refusal to wear a particular costume left the director infuriated.

During a conversation with Radio Nasha, Waheeda Rehman shared that there was a scene in Solva Saal where her character's clothes were meant to get wet, and she needed to change. She had reservations about the costume provided to her and chose to wear something that she felt comfortable in.

This decision did not sit well with the director, who expressed his anger. She revealed. "The director was furious and was so angry that he packed up for the day."

The director's anger was evident as he conveyed to Rehman that she had too many conditions for someone working on only her second or third film, even suggesting that it might be her last. Despite the director's frustration, Rehman remained steadfast in her choice. It was during this incident that Dev Anand, present on the set, chose to support her.

Dev Anand, in a supportive move, spoke to the director after the day's shoot concluded. He sided with Rehman, highlighting that her character, named Lajwanti in the film, should not be dressed in "revealing" attire for the scene. This assurance from Dev Anand conveyed to Rehman that he was firmly on her side and could be relied upon to help resolve any future issues.

She said, “Dev was sweet. He took my side. He told the director that what she is saying is absolutely right. Her character is a shy girl. Her name in the movie is Lajwanti. She shouldn’t be wearing revealing clothes in this scene. What she was saying was right and you got angry for no reason.”

Waheeda Rehman expressed her relief and happiness at having Dev's support, making her feel confident that she could turn to him whenever problems arose on set.
