A Bengali election song video, featuring some of Tollywood's biggest names, has gone viral just two days ahead of the beginning of phase one polls for the Bengal legislative assembly election. Titled 'Nijeder Motey, Nijeder Gaan,' (translated roughly to 'Our Voice, Our Song') the six-minute-long video makes commentary on topical issues, including queer inclusivity and women's freedom, in political contexts.

The Bengali election song, uploaded to a YouTube channel called Citizens United, has been penned by Anirban Bhattacharya with the video directed by Riddhi Sen and Rwitobroto Mukherjee. Industry notables like Sabyasachi Chakraborty, Parambrata Chatterjee and Surangana Bandyopadhyay make significant appearances.

Chatterjee shared the song on Instagram with a long post, claiming at the very onset, "We are not in any team But yes, we are not neutral!"

"You shout out your hollow words louder and louder, you repeat them as if they were universal truths. Among a crowd of lies, our truth suffers," the actors sing, as visuals of university protests and pride flags pass by. The five women celebrities in the video also sing a rendition of Faiz Ahmad Faiz's Hum Dekhenge

1. Reshmi Sen

Sen prominently began her film career in the Bengali industry in 2013 with Bangla Naache Bhangra directed by Nandini. Though not many films old, Sen has amassed a fan following with successes like Swapnajaal, Love Story and was most recently seen in February this year with Bengali film Miss Call.

2. Surangana Bandyopadhyay

An actor and singer, Bandyopadhyay has been in the Bengali industry a long time, starting off her career as a child artist in 2008 and then a dancer on Dance Bangla Dance Junior. Currently in her 20s, she is among the most popular young artists in Tollywood. Mainstream fame came to her with Open Tee Bioscope, in which she both acted and sang. In 2019, she starred in web series Sharate Aaj.

3. Debleena Dutt Mukherjee

Mukherjee also began her career as a child artist in Manush Amanush, alongside Chiranjit, Jishu Sengupta and Ranjit Mallick. She has done extensive work on film and television, with films Taan and Ebar Shabor, and serials Durga and Ekhane Aakash Neel being among her most acclaimed works. She is married to actor Tathagata Mukherjee.

4. Sampa Biswas

Biswas is a noted Bengali playback singer, best known for her work in the area of folk music and her live performances. About the Bengali election song, she wrote on Facebook, "By participating in this song, I have witnessed a beautiful protest which is very relevant in the current situation. Thank you to everyone involved in this work."

5. Piya Chakraborty

Chakraborty is the wife of singer and lyricist Anupam Roy. The couple has been married since 2015. Talking about their relationship, Chakraborty was previously quoted saying, “From being complete strangers to acquaintances to friends -it has been a fluid relationship. What brought us together, amidst other things, was our love for Chandrabindoo." She is a graduate of Presidency University and a PhD holder.
