Upcoming Women-Centric Biopics: Films based on real-life individuals have always attracted audiences. When a film gets made on a famous personality, the story is mostly known to people. And yet there is a curiosity that drives the audience to watch that story unfold on the silver screen.
In some cases, bland headlines are sprinkled with emotions, a controversial figure's good side is shown in the light, their struggles form the plot. Whatever the approach, we all are somehow pushed to find out how a famous person was portrayed on screen.
When it comes to stories of female personality, almost every woman who made it to the top in any field had to go through a series of hurdles. In order to see more women reaching heights, it is imperative to tell their stories. In this case, make biopics about them and most importantly--show the truth.
Here are some biopics you can watch out for in 2021:
Gangubai Kathiawadi
Based on a book titled Mafia Queens of Mumbai, the film will narrate the story of Gangubai Kathiawadi, the woman who ruled brothels in yesteryear's Kamathipura. The film's release date is yet to be announced since the pandemic disrupted its shooting multiple times. Sanjay Leela Bhansali has directed the film.
Its teaser trailer was released earlier this year which garnered many positive reactions for Alia Bhatt's acting in the film. Like many biopics, this film also drew flak from and got engaged in controversies. Read more here.
Shabaash Mithu
Directed by Srijit Mukerjee and starring Taapsee Pannu, the film will be a biopic of Indian cricketer and skipper of Indian women's team Mithali Raj. To be able to play the role of a high ranking cricket champion, Pannu had to go through rigorous training and she shared glimpses of the training session on her social media account.
As per reports, the actor is trained by Nooshin Al Khadeer who is a former Indian cricket player and a friend of Mithali Raj. The film is yet to come out with a release date.
Saroj Khan biopic (untitled)
Three-time National Award-winning choreographer Saroj Khan's life story will be essayed in an upcoming documentary. Bhushan Kumar's production house T-series announced the biopic on Khan's first death anniversary, July 3 this year. The film is yet to get a title but the makers have revealed that the biopic will be about Khan's achievements and struggles.
Saroj Khan in her 71-year long life had choreographed over 35,000 songs in Bollywood films. She was able to give a new life to the dance culture in Hindi films.
Emergency
Actor Kangana Ranaut had announced on July 23 this year that she is going to direct a film titled Emergency which will show the story of former Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi. Ranaut will also play her role in the film.
The is expected to narrate the life story of one of India's most controversial political figures who imposed a state of emergency in the country between 1975 to 1977. More details about the film are awaited.
