While Indian television has hardly been able to portray sensitive issues related to trauma, violence and mental health, TV show Anupamaa tried to this narrative.
Trigger Warning: Domestic Violence and Depression.
The daily soap Anupamaa has become viewers’ favourite over time for its portrayal of sensitive issues like mental health and domestic violence.
Indian TV shows have disregarded the sensible depiction of such delicate issues for quite a long time and it can be seen that they are starting to make up for it. 2022 is here!
The show recently featured an episode where a character named Malvika goes down a mental spiral on witnessing an incident of domestic violence. The protagonist Anupamaa can be seen holding her hand and providing her comfort, without delivering any comments or a fix to the situation.
Soon, Twitterati applauded such realistic and logical characterisation of dealing with mental health and trauma. The audience was thrilled with the non-judgmental and supporting response from Anupamaa while consoling the survivor. On twitter while appreciating the show wrote, " The episode was heart-wrenching and I was a sobbing mess. The dialogues, the music, the camerawork and the performances were on point and impactful. Kudos makers kudos."
While another wrote, " Art is a lie essential for truth. while ITV shows are busy whitewashing cheating partners and getting molester married to the victim, team Anupanaa takes up a subject that is hushed under the carpet in Indian subcontinent. More and more and power to the team."
Being a show with such a great reach, it is crucial to depict such instances with great sensitivity and coherence which it did quite impressively by setting a trend for others to follow. Hopefully, we will be able to see more of such representations in the upcoming media. Another user wrote, " Only the one that has been through pain can understand the pain of others. Anu, Anuj, Malvika. All three of them have their own fair share of mental and emotional trauma. "
Anupamaa is an Indian daily soap airing on StarPlus and Disney Hotstar+. It stars Sudhanshu Pandey, Gaurav Khanna and Rupali Ganguly in the lead roles.
