The Illegal Released: The 2019 film The Illegal released on Amazon Prime on March 23. Originally The Illegal released across film festivals but was not released in theatres for the general public due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The English-language film stars Suraj Sharma, Shweta Tripathi, and Iqbal Theba in the lead roles. The Illegal follows Sharma’s character, a film student in America who is forced to drop out to support his family while being undocumented. Tripathi plays the role of the supportive sister who is Sharma’s character’s connection to his family in India. The Illegal won several awards such as the Special Award for Discovering India in the Mumbai Film Festival, Best Feature Critics Choice in the Vancouver South Asian Film Festival, along with the Best Film Jury Mention and Best Feature Audience Award in the DC South Asian Film Festival. The film was also nominated for the Best Feature Narrative in the Austin Film Festival and Best Feature in the Pasadena International Film Festival.
While Shweta Tripathi was speaking about the film The Illegal, she stated that “I love working with people from different parts of the world. And the team of a project really excites me. And that's exactly how it was at The Illegal."
Tripathi is an actor that is known for her role television series Mirzapur, Made in Heaven, Kya Mast Hai Life, The Trip, The Gone Game and Laakhon Mein Ek. Her most notable roles in movies include Masaan, Haraamkhor, Gone Kesh, Mehandi Circus, Cargo, and Raat Akeli Hai. She was also played a role in the film Zoo, which is India’s first feature film length movie that was shot entirely on an iPhone. Tripathi's role as Gajgamini "Golu" Gupta in season 1 and season 2 of Mirzapur was praised.
