Thalaivi: On the 73rd birth anniversary of the late political leader Jayalalithaa, the makers of the Thalaivi, a biopic on Jayalalitha shared that the film will be releasing on April 23, 2021.
Actor Kangana Ranaut, starring in the titular role announced the film’s release date on social media. Ranaut shared a post on Instagram with the caption "To Jaya Amma, on her birth anniversary. From changing the face of cinema to the fate of a state, Jaya Amma shaped destinies of millions! Witness the story of the legend, Thalaivi, in cinemas on 23rd April, 2021." Co-star Arvind Swami plays Maruthur Gopala Ramachandra in Thalaivi had also shared posters of himself as his character a few months ago.
The film’s shooting had been halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic for a few months in 2020. After 7 months, the lead Ranaut resumed shooting and shared a few behind-the-scenes images. The movie was supposed to air on June 26, 2020 but due to the pandemic it had to be delayed. The film is to be released in Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu.
Jayalalithaa was a film actor turned politician that served six terms as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. She was elected to the Rajya Sabha and later emerged as the sole leader of All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK). Jayalalithaa passed away on December 5, 2020.
