Teen All-Girls Band The Linda Lindas Goes Viral With Song “Racist, Sexist Boy”

The Linda Lindas: The Los Angeles-based girl band recently went viral for their performance on their punk track Racist, Sexist Boy. The song was performed inside a Los Angeles public library and was inspired by a real-life experience of the band members.

The new viral punk band 'The Linda Lindas' has members as young as Mila who is 10, her sister Lucia, 14, their cousin, Eloise, 13, and their friend Bela, 16. The group was inspired to write the song Racist, Sexist Boy after a boy from Mila’s class went up to her and told her that his father warned him to “stay away from Chinese people”. The teen band said that they want to empower people who have been oppressed using this song.

Mila shared that she and Eloise wrote this song based on that first experience she had with racism. “After I told him that I was Chinese, he backed away from me,” she added. In an interview with The Guardian, the 10-year-old shared that she did not know how to respond initially. "It was my first experience of racism, and I didn't really know how to respond," she said.

"We made it less about intelligence and more about being a bully," Lucia explained about the song. "We wanted to tell a story about something that actually happened to a 9-year-old girl – so it becomes impossible to ignore," she said. Bela, 16, also said that many people have been reaching out to their band after the viral video. "People are feeling heard. It's pretty cool to see the thousands of people in our DMs telling us that it really touched them," she shared.

I grew up with the DIY culture of punk, going to punk shows, making mixtapes – with the idea that anyone can do whatever," said band member Eloise. That viral performance of the group also earned them to sign with punk label Epitaph Records.

The Linda Lindas formed back in 2018 and have had influence even before their recent viral video. The four-member band performed an original song for a Netflix documentary and was also invited by Kathleen Hanna of Rock Band Bikini Hill to open at their 2019 show at the Hollywood Palladium.
