Tabu, one of the most versatile and well-acclaimed actress turns 50 today. With her wide-ranging roles, she has proven her mettle in acting. Her most recent project A Suitable Boy has won her accolades from fans and audiences yet again.

Here are 10 things you should know about the actress on her birthday.
- Tabu was born on November 4, 1971 as Tabassum Fatima Hashmi in Kolkata. Her parents divorced soon after and she grew up with her mother. She studied at St. Xavier’s College in Mumbai for two years. She is the niece of veteran actress Shabana Azmi.
- She is multilingual and can speak nine different languages, such as Telugu, Hindi, English, Bengali, Marathi, Tamil, Malayalam, Spanish and a little bit of French.

- Tabu is a vegan, although her mother cooks delicious biryani. Moreover, she is a fitness freak and never misses out on her exercise regime.
- Tabu has claimed that she has never cried on the sets of a movie. She reportedly uses glycerine for emotional scenes as she cannot cry while shooting.
- She made her debut in the film industry with Bazaar (1982), although her appearance was not credited. She was just 10. Her first Hindi release as a leading lady was in Pehla Pehla Pyar (1994), which did not do well at the box-office. However, her rise to prominence was with Vijaypath (1994) opposite Ajay Devgn, for which she received Best Female Debut at Filmfare.
- Tabu’s break in Bollywood was supposed to be the film Prem, opposite Sanjay Kapoor and produced by Boney Kapoor. However, the film took eight years to complete. The movie flunked at the box-office.
- Tabu was initially accused in the blackbucks poaching case in 1998 during the filming of the movie Hum Saath Saath Hain. The trial court, however, acquitted Saif Ali Khan, Sonali Bendre, Neelam Kothari and Tabu, along with Dushyant Singh.

- Tabu has won two National Awards, for Maachis and Chandni Bar. She also won Filmfare Best Actress Awards for her impressive performances in films like Virasat, Hu Tu Tu, Astitva, Chandni Bar, among others. She has won the IIFA award for her heart-rending role in Chandni Bar. Tabu received the Padma Shri in 2011 for her contribution towards Indian cinema.
- Tabu is one of the few actresses who have worked in Hollywood. Her film, The Namesake (2006), based on Jhumpa Lahiri's novel, directed by Mira Nair was appreciated by critics across the globe. Her second film Life of Pi (2012) was a great success as it won four Oscars.
- The actress is reportedly called by many nicknames by her friends at the sets, the most popular being Tabs,Tubs, Tubby, Tobler and Toblerone.
