Thappad wins at Cannes: Actor Taapsee Pannu's Thappad has added another feather to its cap after its commercial success and critical acclaim. The film has now bagged the silver Lion for ‘The World’s Most Reported Trailer’ on day three of the Cannes Lions event.
Anubhav Sinha, the director of the film, took to his social media and shared the news by posting a short video on Wednesday. Thappad garnered praise from the audience worldwide and triggered a conversation on domestic violence among its viewers.
The promotional campaign of the film featured on YouTube and other official social media platforms, showing the scene where the male lead, played by Pavail Gulati, slaps his wife, played by Taapsee Pannu, during a party, in front of the guests. It was campaigned by Dentsu Webchutney and produced by Trigger Happy Entertainment Pvt Ltd. The hard-hitting content aimed to spread awareness about domestic violence. The film's lead actor Taapsee Pannu emerged as the highest-grossing actress of the Hindi film industry last year, Zoom TV reported.
Talking about the issue of domestic violence which the film addresses, Sinha had earlier noted that he was actually planning to base the backdrop of the movie in a non-metro, but the women members of his team informed him that the issue is prevalent in cities and upper middle-class families too.
“I knew people would have polarised reactions. I never wanted to change people. I just wanted to start a discussion. That has been my aim from Pink to Thappad,” Pannu said in an interview. The movie also won five awards at Kyoorius Advertising Awards 2020. It also received 14th Asian Film Awards nominations last year. This year, it won Filmfare awards for Best Background Score, Best Editing, Best Sound Design, Best Playback Singer (Male), Best Actress and Best Story.
