Nepotism has been an age-old discussion that has been around for a while now. It is the never-ending debate of star kids being favored over and always having an upper hand when it comes to acting opportunities and a guaranteed path to success. While several star kids have accepted the privilege nepotism offers, some others have called the phenomenon detrimental and pressuring.
Nepotism is the privilege that star kids are given due to their connections and contacts in the industry. Having parents or relatives in the film industry gives them easy access to well-known filmmakers and opportunities are better. However, the old debate remains that the filmmakers only favour star kids which causes even the most talented actors to suffer. The 'outsiders' as they call it, are given fewer and fewer chances, while star kids get a straight road to success with the elite of the Bollywood favouring them.
While many star kids have acknowledged the privilege of prevailing nepotism, few others have stated that nepotism causes uncalled-for pressure in the minds of star kids. They are frequently compared and trolled and the stakes are high which usually results in more mental pressure, no satisfaction in their job, or might even lead them to quit this field for good.
7 Times-Star Kids Made Headlines: Abhimanyu Dasani Speaks Up On Nepotism
Abhimanyu Dassani son of Bhagyashree of Maine Pyaar Kiya fame spoke up about Nepotism in an interview. He said that the audience and media publications are so taken away by this debate on nepotism that they refuse to acknowledge the hard work put into a project. He also revealed that no publication mentioned his success in his first movie for which he won awards and international recognition, all so that they could term him as yet another product of nepotism. He has sparked the nepotism debate all over again. Many other star kids have spoken up about nepotism and that made headlines many a time. Here are 7 times star kids made headlines with their statements on nepotism.
Abhimanyu Dassani
"People don't understand the word, and they misinterpret it. Nepotism is nothing but enhanced favoritism. In a way, nepotism is an entitlement, and star kid is a title. There is a big difference between these two terms. Let me tell you that outsiders are entitled and you will understand that when you will have a personal conversation with them. On the other side, a lot of star kids are not entitled. Nepotism isn't always associated with star kids, there are outsiders who have got opportunities due to favoritism".
Sonam Kapoor
She spoke up initially when the nepotism debate started when Kangana Ranaut called Karan Johar the 'flag bearer' of nepotism. She defended Karan Johar calling him the most ethical and helpful person. She also took to Twitter on father's day back in 2020 acknowledging the privilege. The tweet read- "Yes I’m my father's daughter and yes I am here because of him and yes I’m privileged. That’s not an insult, my father has worked very hard to give me all of this. And it is my karma where I’m born and to whom I’m born. I’m proud."
Sara Ali Khan
The actor made headlines after she said in an interview- “I definitely believe that knowing people in the industry does help. That’s not a fact that I can run away from. I’ve often admitted to the fact that the biggest advantage of nepotism is that we have easy access to people. There’s also a level of protection that we enjoy. Not that we’ve asked for it, not that we choose our parents, and not that we need to work any less hard. But anyone who denies this isn’t cool.”
Alia Bhatt
Bhatt, who is currently one of the most in-demand actors in the country has also been targeted in the nepotism debate. She also commented on this saying- “I want to punch all those people who say that star kids have it easy because it makes no sense. The way the world is today, either you have it or you don’t.”
Ananya Pandey
The actor was trolled after her opinion on nepotism on the Rajeev Masand show. She said, "When people hate on me for nepotism, I’m not going to shy away from the fact that I’m Chunky Pandey’s daughter. My Dad has worked really hard and he’s still working. My Dad never did a Dharma film, my Dad never went on Koffee with Karan. It isn’t as easy as people say it is. Everyone has their own journey.”
Janhvi Kapoor
Janhvi Kapoor is often trolled and compared to her mother, Sridevi. When asked about nepotism and being a product of the same she said- "I can't let it bog me down because I know there are people out there who would kill for this opportunity. I understand their feeling of being cheated a little bit. And it won't go away until I prove myself worthy"
Kareena Kapoor
The actor makes headlines time and again for her statements. She'd also made the headlines for her response when asked about nepotism. Be it Karisma, Kareena, or Ranbir, they are all popular actors in the industry of their times. When asked about nepotism, Kareena Kapoor said, "21 years of working would not have happened with just nepotism. It is not possible. I can take a long list out of superstars' children for whom it's not been able to happen that way". She further added-"The audience has made us, nobody else has made us. The same people pointing fingers, they are only making these nepotistic stars. Aap jaa re ho na film dekhne? Mat jao (You are going to watch the films, right? Don’t go). Nobody has forced you. So I don't understand it. I find this whole discussion is completely weird."
