Netflix will release its original film Skater Girl that will revolve around the life of a Rajasthan girl who loves the sport of skating. The film is said to be the first Indian film about skating, will release on June 11.
Manjari Makijany directed Indian-American film pens the story of a teen girl, Prerna, who hails from a typical Indian family. The film focuses on Prerna's struggle to convince her father, to whom skateboarding is an activity for boys.
The trailer unveils with the saying, "The only way to conquer fear is to go through it. Believe, you got it!" which already hints towards the inspirational content of the film.
Skater Girl is set to release on streaming platform Netflix on June 11. Written by Makijany, the film is also produced by her.
The feature directorial debut is a coming-of-age story about "confidence, courage, and the profound impact of blazing your own trail."
The lead character, Prerna, who is played by Rachel Saanchita Gupta, is a local teen whose life is "bound by tradition and duty to her parents". Her life changes when London-bred advertising executive Jessica, who is played by Amy Maghera, arrives in the village.
Jessica introduced Prerna as well as other local children to skating along with her old friend who is played by Jonathan Readwin. The encounter of the villager with the two foreigners leads to a small youth revolution as the children struggle for the right to express themselves through skating, while adults see it as a dangerous activity.
"Determined to empower and encourage their newfound passion, Jessica sets out on an uphill battle to build the kids their own skatepark," the plotline read, "leaving Prerna with a difficult choice between conforming to society's expectations of her and living out her dream of competing in the National Skateboarding Championship".
The cast additionally includes Waheeda Rehman in a guest appearance, along with Shafin Patel and Jonathan Readwin.
