More About Norah Jones and Anoushka Shankar

Iconic sitar player and composer Late Pandit Ravi Shankar won five Grammy Awards and was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 55th Grammy Awards. His legacy continues through his two talented daughters, jazz singer Norah Jones and sitar player Anoushka Shankar.

Norah Jones, born Geetali Norah Shankar, is known for her soulful voice and has won nine Grammy Awards and sold over 50 million albums worldwide, making her one of the most acclaimed artists of her generation. On the other hand, Anoushka Shankar is a celebrated sitar player and musician of Indian descent. She has been nominated multiple times for the Grammy Awards, including in the Best World Music Album category, and has won various other prestigious accolades.

Although they share the same father, Norah Jones and Anoushka Shankar were raised in distinct environments. Norah, the elder sister originally named Geetali Norah Shankar, was born in 1979 in New York to Sue Jones and Ravi Shankar. Anoushka, the younger sibling, was born in 1981 in London to Ravi Shankar and Sukanya Rajan.

Norah’s relationship with Ravi Shankar was strained for many years, as he never married her mother, and they separated when she was young. It wasn't until she turned 18 that Jones reached out to her father, eventually building a closer relationship over time. The sisters have since pursued successful careers in their unique musical paths, with their first major collaboration occurring in 2013 on Anoushka’s album Traces of You, where Norah provided vocals for several tracks.

In a 2022 interview with Vogue, Norah Jones spoke about her evolving relationship with her father and sister, highlighting a sense of reconciliation. She reflected, “My father was a sweet, funny, and brilliant person. I’m grateful that we had the chance to mend our relationship and get to know each other. It’s easier to shed things as you get older and start seeing your parents as a regular, flawed human, without any bad intentions.” She acknowledged that she may not be the perfect parent but is willing to embrace imperfection: “The most important thing is that your children feel loved.”

Jones also shared how her half-sister, Anoushka, influenced her ability to balance life as a musician and a mother. Despite living between New York and London, where Anoushka is based, the family ensures they come together every summer. “My sister and I are close, and though we didn’t share a childhood, we’ve clung to each other in adulthood.”

Anoushka also shares a deep bond and affection for her sister Norah. This year, she celebrated Norah’s birthday by posting a heartfelt message, “Thank you for being the best elder sister I could have asked for,  for teaching me about Stevie Wonder when I was sixteen and helping me feel worldly wise in big bad New York City at 18 and encouraging me to find my sound and follow my heart ever since. And all the little/big things along the way. I love you.”
