Srijit Mukherji’s newest film Sherdil: The Pilibhit Saga’s first trailer was released today morning.
Sherdil features actors Pankaj Tripathi, Neeraj Kabi, and Sayani Gupta in leading roles. The film will portray the story of Tripathi’s character, Gangaram. The film is inspired by real events that took place in the Pilibhit Tiger Reserve, Uttar Pradesh where people would leave their elder family members for the tigers to prey on and then claim compensation from the administration.
In Sherdil The Pilibhit Saga, Pankaj Tripathi’s character Gangaram is from a village and decides to give up his life so that the families in his village will receive compensation from the government scheme that promises to help the families of tiger attack victims. His wife played by Sayani Gupta attempts to stop him from leaving. While awaiting death in the forest, he encounters a poacher named Jim, portrayed by Neeraj Kabi. Due to a misunderstanding, Tripathi’s character is arrested for animal poaching.
The film focuses on the adverse effects of urbanisation, man vs animal conflict, poverty and how poverty can lead to strange practices.
In a press statement, Bengali writer and director Srijit Mukherji described the movie as his “dream project for years”. Mukherji said that he had read about the real life incidents that inspired the movie in 2017, and immediately wrote the story. He said that “finally after 5 years the dream comes true and we bring you the story of Gangaram on the big screen.”
