Indian actor Shashikala Om Prakash Saigal passed away on Sunday at the age of 88. The veteran actor, who was popularly known by her first name, Shashikala, has appeared in numerous films in supporting roles.
The cause of her demise is not yet known and an official statement from her family members is still awaited.
Confirming the news, Indian politician and businessman Praful Patel shared a tweet on April 4 and wrote, “Deeply saddened by the demise of Veteran actress Shashikala ji. She made a noteworthy contribution to Indian Cinema by portraying several pivotal roles. My heartfelt condolences to her family members. May her soul rest in peace”.

In the long span of over 60 years in the film industry, the Bollywood actor has famously played the supporting character parts in over 100 movies. In 2007, she was awarded the prestigious Padma Shri for her contribution to the world of cinema and arts. The actor also received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the V. Shantaram Awards in 2009.
The veteran actor is well-known for her performance in films like Daku, Jugnu, Mujhse Shaadi Karogi, Rahgir. Apart from the silver screen, Shashikala has also featured in television shows like Son Pari and Jeena Isi Ka Naam Hai.
The actor had bagged eight nominations for the Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award for 1962 film Aarti and 1963 film Gumrah, which she won twice.
Born on August 4, 1932 in Maharashtra’s Solapur district, the Padma Shri awardee was inclined towards arts at a young age. Shashikala was married to Om Prakash Saigal and they are parents of two daughters.
