Sharma sisters of Bridgerton Kate and Edwina Sharma, have stolen the hearts of the audience ever since they arrived on our screens. Apart from the Romantic triangle between the Sharma sisters with Anthony Bridgerton played by Jonathan Bailey, it warms our hearts to see the tenderness of bonding between these half-siblings throughout the show.
Sharma sisters Kate and Edwina played by Simone Ashley and Charithra Chandran respectively, narrate the story of a family that hails from Bombay originally, with a connection to the high society through their mother Lady Mary Sharma. Season 2, based on the book "The Viscount Who Loved Me" follows Anthony Bridgerton and his quest for finding a suitable wife.
Simone Ashley and Charithra Chandran, have portrayed the role of the Sharma sisters of Bridgerton with such ease and prowess. They hold their own throughout the series. The character development of each of these characters is immense. The representation of the coming of age of two women, finding themselves, emerging victorious in finding a partner or otherwise is so rightly done by the actors.
Here are 7 reasons why the Sharma sisters of Bridgerton are the highlight of Season 2:
- Sharma sisters, Kate and Edwina portrayed by Simone Ashley and Charithra Chandran bring in the much-needed representation of Indian culture and characters on a global platform.
- The casting is appropriate as both Simone and Charithra share Tamil backgrounds from India.
- More often than not, in the offset of a triangle love story, sisters are pitched against each other. Sharma sisters keep their bond intact as they find their way through this complicated scenario.
- Simone and Charithra, as Kate and Edwina have shown a pure bond between sisters as tenderly as they could. Their moments of intimacy have been very well portrayed by both the actors. Charithra Chandran stated, “In moments of deep sadness, and in moments of jubilation, you see them reverting back to their culture."
- Kate Sharma has very beautifully portrayed taking on duty before desire. She finds herself snubbing her desire for Anthony for the sake of her little sister Edwina. Throughout the season, tiny sacrifices like this can be seen from Kate.
- Both Simone Ashley and Charithra have in their own ways broken stereotypes, of hasty relationships between women, of difficult women, and have carried out beautifully what it means to be a woman, in all of her complexities.
- Edwina Sharma emerges victorious in finding herself, whereas the older sister Kate finds happiness in marriage to Anthony Bridgerton, making it clear to the audience that victor can mean different things to different women. How it is important for women to find themselves and their own voice as much as a happy ending with a partner.
Bringing on diversity to a global show like Bridgerton, Simone and Chandran have definitely become fan favorites. Talking more about their characters both the actors have stated how they came to love their characters. Simone in an ">interview about her character stated, “I didn’t really watch period dramas much because I felt like I couldn’t relate to them, maybe because I couldn’t see myself within one, And then Bridgerton came along.”
Charithra Chandran revealed that she started to love the character, Edwina, more and more as she started filming. She said, “Wouldn’t the world be a better place if everyone could be a bit more like Edwina,” She has also stated that she only took up the character because she felt like her evolution was something young girls needed to see. Simone and Charithra, as Sharma sisters are definitely the highlight of season 2. With Jonathan Bailey hinting at their return in further seasons, fans are eagerly waiting to see more of them in the upcoming seasons of Bridgerton.
